Dont take long to read it Grizz

Okay Big, I read it and I find the concept very interesting. My hats off to anyone that can get off the grid. I wish I could, but with only half an acre, it may be difficult. I can grow my own vegetables, I've done it before to a limited extent. I can have livestock since I live in the county. I have had two horses, which is my limit for half an acre. Something to think about.

grizz

Good reading. Thanks BIG. The commentary offer lots to think about. I don't think I could ever get completely off grid, but when I retire and set up my next camp, I will be thinking about being more self reliant than I am now.

That's what was intended Wayne I think that in the not to distant future of this country there is going to be all HELL break loose im not worried about it up here but if I were in the city  That's my concern now that our Daughter is coming to MT we will have all that I care about (for the most part) Near.

I found his water system interesting, with a tank overhead to allow gravity to supply pressure. That's kinda how the NYC water system works coming down from the elevation in the Catskills.
Big, how do you handle water supply and demand such as laundry, showers, etc. ? Do you test quality?

Wayne our well pumps are ran off the the solar/wind gen ran to a cistern tank under the ground to conserve heat its got copper coil tubing rapped around it many times. The thought of the copper tubing was that some day I want to run a hot water boiler fired from wood around the water tank to keep it from freezing it has been put into the ground and surrounded by another tank and then foam shot into the space between the two of them, and then run the house on the hot water. As of now the foam alone has kept our cistern water from freezing WITHOUT the hot water going thru the copper tubing that is around the tank. We can do the laundry without firing up the aux gen ran on Propane during the summer when we have many hours of sun but now that we dont the wife runs the aux gen for a couple of hours a week to run the washer/propane dryer without putting a major drain on the batts it runs the washer dryer and TOPS UP THE BATTS to full charge. She watches the weather and does the wash on days that corresponds with no solar/wind charge days so the aux gen is ran for as many uses as it can and not ran on days when its getting charge from the solar MOST days we have a wind so the wind gen charges up allot during the winter. :Hot water is from a tank less propane water heater only runs when you need hot water, had one in CA that was natural gas EITHER WAY TANKLESS is the way to go. I have done countless water tests all are within limits so says the county and state but not us, so I run it thru a sediment filter to 5 microns a charcoal filter and a mineral/chemical filter this area was a mining town way back when they used some real nasty stuff back before they knew it was, in the summer you can tell the water table gets lower and some ugly things start to appear STILL WITHIN LIMITS but not mine.

Lighting is almost all LED with the exception of two heat lamps in the batt storage room and most of the LEDs are 12volt to cut even further back on power consumption.

Great article Big,

Yeah I like the tone of the piece and I think the examples the author uses to describe anyone who wants to attempt this; as being antisocial or extremist are so predicable from a left leaning pop culture oriented urban type. I already incorporate some of the things that are described in this piece. I have always been independent and self starting, and that is something the main body of our society fears.

Mr stanmar
Like you I have been one to DO IT MY WAY (even if the wife tells me not to) We like the thought of being independent and not reliant on anyone, if that can truly happen. We know that we need some things but they are for the most part for comfort reasons and if we had to could do without them. Our next big hurdle is to get off the need of propane I fear this is going to be hard because try as I mite I just cant get the wife to get into doing the wash with one of these and hanging the clothes out on a line to dry

Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are!

Wayne

The only thing on our property that is not leagal is the shop floor has a work pit in it. I dont mind working on things but HATE to crawl and squirm around on the floor on my back ANYMORE THAN I HAVE TO. In our county for some unknown reason your not allowed to have a pit and I cant see buying one of those BIG A** FLOOR LIFTS nice YES!!!! but not to pratical for me.

We pick up our (mostly junk) mail when ever we think about it and are in town the wife handles all of our things on line, so she says? I DONT KNOW BECAUSE I DONT CARE HOW SHE DOES IT AS LONG AS I DONT. So what this meens is that unless you know where to turn into the drive or I dont have out our 4x6 sheet of plastic with a BRIGHT ORANGE Dot on it you cant and wont see where we live. I like that allot :D

If they can find me and they want to look around not a problem. The Sheriff wont say anything HE'S MY DRINKING BUDDY. :-laf

Mostly up here people leave eachother ALONE!!! another thing we like, if you want to talk to us look for us in town

BIG

PS I dont think in your link above that I would like looking at that across the street from me living in a suburbia type setting.

THE REASON THAT THE WIFE AND I (PICTURED BELOW) LIKE TO BE LEFT ALONE IS BECAUSE WE ARE SO GOOD LOOKING!!!

Regarding the pit. They are frowned upon because the belief is that fumes can collect down there and create an explosive/ toxic situation. Be careful down there. In the landfill, that's how we PM'd the bulls and it was your initiation when you were a newbie to clean it out. LOL.

I was just bringing this up casually because some guys might try to be more self reliant, and just like the old car hobby or anything else that's only your business, people just SUCK. I'm always typing about my future plans- they include a property that at least has a partial canopy of trees that block the prying eyes of GOOGLE!!

For any of you guys who are into solar I recently found an interesting blog from a guy who lives off the grid and seems to know a bit about solar power. I would be more interested in doing this but back East I must have an air conditioner.

Needing an air conditioner is ALL THE MORE REASON TO GET INTO SOLAR!!!!! any place I've heard of this works the same way I belong to another forum that is just off grid but discussions tend to be all over the spectrum of solar and wind power alternatives. You can get solar panels and still run your AC. You sell the power your panels make BACK TO THE POWER COMPANY. Actually you dont SELL THEM the put it on account and then when you need power to run the AC you can. Take a look at it. Its gird tied solar it dont take much to make your power meter at the breaker box to your house RUN BACKWARDS.
