I Solved The "Oil Wars"

Haven't done any EGT comparisons to the BHAF yet, but am very pleased with the lack of noise.

Made some cowl area mods before the 4. 5" hole was cut. Here's the cowl mods:

- Double layered the back wall of the cowl area from the left most passenger side to the air opening with that sound deadner stuff. It's a 1/8" thick, black tar in a roll stuff, sticky on 1 side. Frank D buddy gave me 2 pieces about 6" x 12".

- Constructed 2 aluminum 'dams' set about 4" apart. The right most dam is just to the left of the air inlet to the cab. This inlet is just left / off center of the center of the cowl. The 2nd dam is 4" left. Drains are cut in the bottom of the dams. Between the dams is stuffed with foam. The foam is cut so that the cowl lid just compresses it. The intent is to block air suction / noise from jumping the cowl dam & getting to the cab air intake. It worked. :)

- There is an opening in the back of the cowl wall to the cab air. It's all the way to the left side of the cowl. This got stuffed with foam, real tight.

Bottom line on noise, louder than the BHAF. No where as loud as an RE-0880. NOT objectionable to me. :)

In the hush mode, the Scotty II is about as loud as the BHAF, maybe just slightly louder.

Can't wait to make some EGT runs. Oo.

I've always thought a dam in the cowl would deaden the Scotty sound but have wondered what effect it would have on air flow into the cab.

Notice any difference?

Nope, no noticeable difference. I tested airflow w/o the fan motor on ... all vents flowed.

The main air entry on my 96 is an oblong shaped hole that's close to the center of the cowl area. The right most dam wall is just to the left of it.

The only air entry spot I blocked was that 'crack' @ the left corner. It's got to be less than 1" wide & it tapers top & bottom.

On the drive this morning, did boost up the on-ramp. Yep, got noise ... again, not objectionable & far less than the RE-0880. As a baseline for my ears, the RE-0880 was way too loud.

Hey Scotty ... use to be able to peg 1500 easily, now it just creeps past 1200. What up with that, huh? Trying to take my justification for a bigger turbo away? ;)

Don ... I think you can make some bigger holes in those Mach 3's. :D

IT SUCKS!

For a system that some folks say does not work and apparently flows less then other systems, eh?

LOL

Glad to read a favorable post.

Scotty

It SUCKS COOOoOooOooOoooL AIR more then any other system out there.

:D

I've run my Scotty II for about 9 months now.

It is noticably quieter with a little "coating" of dust / dirt and I do have the cowl hole open.

Actually I like driving by listening to the purr of the turbine. You can make adjustments way before the gauges change, you get better mpg too.

When I first got the Scotty II, the wife made a comment "what's that?", I told her. Now she does not even notice it and we do 1 hour + drives frequently.

Yep, that would be me. I was trying just about anything to get the whine down.

At first I thought the turbo whine was LOUD and did wear ear plugs. I blocked the cowl hole off and was digging into the TAG concept.

The Scotty II really works but the whine was just a bit much to me, AND I wanted the cowl hole open. Have the cake and eat it too.

I think I have gotten use to it, but I also think that a little "coating" really makes a big difference. I looked at the filter the other day and thought "needs to be cleaned", however maybe it can be too clean. Sort of a built in noise dampener.

I will also be GLAD to PUBLICALLY state that the SCOTTY II really works well! And I DID have issues with the turbo noise.

BUT, maybe I have gotten use to it, maybe it is dampened, but at this point it is just a gentle soft whistle. WHY?, not sure, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

------------------------------

I would recommend to those that were like I was trying to do just about anything to quieten it down, give it some time.

------------------------------

It does a good job and for whatever reason, I have gotten use to it, or it is dampened by the dirt in the filter, the Scotty II does it at a perfectly acceptable sound level.

Just ribbing you Bob. I'll admit the whine bothered me enough that if I jumped off a tractor into the truck I kept my earplugs in. But like you I got used to it, no big deal now.

Posted some pictures on the "View Reader's Rigs Gallery" link.

When I put the cowl back on, following the 10/8/03 picture link, I noticed more sound. I didn't pay attention to the cowl "fit". One of the plastic retainers broke & the cowl wasn't setting down all the way. I yanked it today, snapped some pictures & wrapped the top of the dam insert with plastic. I then squirted that gooey foam insulation all around the top of the dam & put the cowl lid back on.

Oh, those little plastic studs are $4 @ Dodge
