TDR Question

20/20 Friday night

so here goes... ... and hopefully with nobody getting hurt - just our pride... ...

POLISH ENGINE FLUSH!!!!!

This week getting ready for a trip I changed the oil. Now when I do this I let her drain for at least an hour..... I know, but "old school" and like to look and see that just like Maxwell House... "good to the last drop"

OK - just in case something happens and I have to go someplace, when the job isn't complete, I put a small sign on steering wheel - NO OIL - DO NOT START!

OK - my Procedure...

A. Drive truck up on my "Redneck" Truck Stand - (staggered progressively shortened 2x10's drilled into each other - about 8" high)... block accordingly.
B. Put large Oil Tub on cardboard under truck..... remove oil fill cap and dipstick.
C. Loosen plug and begin drain.....
D. Remove air filter to get access to oil filter.....
E. Remove oil filter (using the 1 gallon freezer bag).
F. Fill filter with Oil... . and replace.
G. Fully remove the Oil Plug.
H. WAIT for Oil to Drain... .
I. Lube everything..... I usually also jack up the rear end so I can rotate the driveshaft for zerk fittings...
J. Replace Oil Plug.
K. Fill with oil (I use Rotellt T synthetic)
L. Check, record and clean up.....

OK - checklists are there, if really important - YOU NEED TO CHECK OFF ON EACH - to prevent forgetting. - - DUH!!!!!

OK - I have safeguards in place to hopefully prevent anybody from starting the truck with no oil BUT NOT FROM STARTING TO PUT OIL INTO THE TRUCK BEFORE COMPLETING FREAKING STEP J :eek:

J. Replace Plug. :eek: :confused:

OK - it could have been much worse - I could have removed the oil pan - BUT I would never do that - as I know the plug needs to be replaced... . Now after having been subjected to way to many very large and loud explosions, and (as many of you know Uncle Sam didn't give you hearing protection while touring exotic far away places in the 60's) as a result my hearing isn't what it should be... I hear - SOMETHING IS RUNNING SOUND..... BUT after 2 -YES 2 - TWO - FREAKING $19. 00 gallons of oil running THROUGH my ENGINE. ... ... I detect this... . Cute HUH!!!!

So Obviously - DON"T DO THIS - Unless you want to flush your engine... . :-laf

Heck of a way to get that sneaky "last drop" out. :-laf

I use a very similar checklist stored in my head on one of my two remaining brain cells - apparently the flickering one... I can attest that cardboard is not very absorbent... :eek: And neither are the old acrylic socks thrown into the rag bucket...

If you ever run out of freezer bags because somebody has made snacky-treats to take to the grandkids (thanks wifey - right in the middle of a critical procedure) you can use a tubular plastic bag that a 6 or 12 pack of english muffins comes in. Thanks yet again to wifey, for holding up the muffin bag and asking in her sweetest voice "Will this work"? I knew there's a reason I kept her for thirty-bunches of years. Besides, I don't think I could handle going through another training session - the nose ring and choker collar - ouch! Yes dear (nodding head)...
 
Well, the good part is, you probably will only do that one time. I've had my one time already but it was on a car and not with synthetic. Maybe the question is, is it more important to get every drop out or to make sure the plug gets back in at the right time? Getting under the truck and then getting back upright is not that much fun anymore so I sometimes wait a few minutes and re-install the plug before I return to the topside. :) bg
 
Take a real man to admit this one, kinda gut you'd invite to help with a KDP full tear down and case R&R.

I left a bolt out when I did the timing chain on a 318" W200 project truck, put coolant in, out it came, had to tear the entire front end down to put the mystery bolt in place, a small certificate of lack of attention to detail, but a PITA!

I had to think over this one for awhile????

Forgot to install the slinger on a 5 liter Olds. Found out when I finally got the PITA steering pump bolt in, and saw the slinger on the intake lid. OOPS.
 
I forgot to tighten the drain plug on my truck. Had it in only finger tight. Filled with oil, cleaned up and called it good. Drove about a block or two and thought to myself, going through the steps in my head not to forget anything. Man I forgot to tight the plug, in a panic, I pulled over, climbed under the truck and the plug worked about half way out. Luckily I had a 3/8 ratchet in the truck. Thank God I stopped to look before the plug fell out and lost all the oil. Won't happen again.
 
Did you know that if you have a ram with 6" lift and 37's and use a low profile drain pan(the kind that has a funnel built into the top with a plug in the middle so you can take it to dispose of the oil), that the oil is scared of the pan and will go EVERYWHERE BUT the pan. I came out from under the truck jet black!

What about mystery parts? I changed the oil on a 71 Furd Cabin-over tractor, engine was the venerable NTC 250, holds like 10 gallons of oil. Anyhoo, all the oil drained out and as I reached up to get the plug back in, I noticed something hanging half out of the plug hole. Fished out a really long machined bolt, then stuck my pinky up in the drain hole and pulled out another! Huh! Well, the rest of the story is no story, no one ever could figure if those bolts came from the engine innards or what. Engine ran fine and I drove that tractor on a Carolina to NYC run for the next 6 months, no problem.

I've had that same thing happen, but it was on a stock height truck and a slightly windy day!
 
1st oil change---took out oil drain pan and creeper and wrench and rolled under truck. Pulled oil plug and watched it drain. Realized that standard drain pan would not hold 12 qts. Tried to replace oil plug, found out it's much eaiser to take out than put in while oil was running out. Cussed and cleaned floor!!!!! Bought NEW drain pan that had covered top with drain hole in the middle but held at least 12 qts of oil. Pulled drain plug watched oil drain and then fill up the top of oil drain pan and run over the sides. Then noticed yellow valve looking thing on the side of top of drain pan. Opened vavle and watched oil run into the drain hole. Cussed and cleaned up floor again!! "There is no cure for stupid"!!!!!

I was detailing my engine and took my air filter off and put a plastic Wal-mart bag over the end of the air intake to keep water from getting in there. I was about done and for some reason thought I needed to fire the truck up. I start it and right after it fires off it dies. I try to start it again and all it will do is crank, then it hit me "oh crap the bag is still on there" I jump out and look at the end of the tube, but the bag is gone. I take the intake off and find the bag sucked into my turbo. I gentle pull it out, and examine it to make sure its all there and fire the truck up. Yep that was dumb.
 
I was acting as my brothers assistant on a total engine rebuild of a "Free" car he was given. The specimine was a ~87 Chevy Cavalier 5 speed. He worked tirelessly for days removing the motor and sending off various parts to be honed, baked, decked, polished, etc. . Once the motor was reassembled I helped him in dropping it back into the car. Long story short we ended up removing the motor 2x to diagnose a HUGE oil leak. We finally noticed a very small hole drilled in one of the oil gallery plugs. Seems that someone at the parts place thought it would be funny to drill a hole in said plug. Sure did contribute to some long nights in the garage.



We learned to NEVER ACCEPT A FREE CAR.
 
Left a 2 foot 1/2 inch drive extension bar on top of a gasser engine once,crawled underneath on my back and started banging on some thing to get loose,bar rolled of the top of the engine a got me square in the forehead,cut/blood too. Cheap lesson,the teeth were spared----"MESSAGE TO SELF,NO MORE TOOLS LEFT ON ENGINE",lesson learned---so far.
