Another Great Idea!

we need a "how to" section to put stuff in

I had a brainstorm tonight on how I could do the buttons so that they wouldn't wrap to multiple lines on narrow screens. I made the change tonight. They still don't format perfectly on narrower screens (part of the button will get chopped off) but they shouldn't double up any more.

Just FYI, Steve... . didn't fix the text spilling or the buttons wrapping on the OS X Mac running Explorer 5. 2... so I fired it up on the same machine using Netscape 7 and the text and buttons are perfect there with the same font! Headscratcher.....

I am running a Mac with OS 8. 6 and IE5. It is still messed up. To get rid of the problem, I have to change text zoom to 75%, and that makes the text objectionably small.

I guess I don't understand why it is that you can't have your previous button arrangement that worked perfectly fine here, and apparently for everyone else.

The current "look" of it, with multiple button images overlapping and text on and off buttons is very hard to read, hard to find what you want...

I sure hope you can resolve this, and thanks for your consideration.

There's several reasons Gordon. Those buttons were taking up 2k per button (with 20 buttons x 2k = 40k total for the buttons) - with the current arrangement it is 2k for two buttons (4k total). We had many requests from users to have everything on the forums screen instead of just the links we had. That made for even more buttons. We also have many users on dial up connections and quite a few of those are on very slow dial up connections. If we were to have the buttons as they were with all of the buttons that are up there now it would take 50% more time for each and every page to load for those people - and they are waiting a long time already. I'm going to try to find someone with a Mac that I can do some testing on. The way I have the buttons now should work fine on all browsers - IF they accurately portrayed the text the way the HTML standard calls for. Obviously some of the browsers on the Mac do not do that. I have only heard from 2 people at this point that the buttons are still coming up strange for and both of you are running Mac OS and IE 5. If I can find a like machine that I can do code changes and test I may be able to find a way to portray it accurately there too. But it's difficult to do that without access to that exact configuration.

Steve- I also fired up Apples new browser Safari, and the buttons are just fine on it as well as Netscape. So it is a Microsoft issue, related to both Explorer 5 for Mac OS8-9 AND Explorer 5. 2 on OS X.

Another Microsoft moment .....
