I understand weighing both the truck and 5th at the same time to get total weight. What axles do you weigh before you put whole rig on the scales and what info do you derive from this?

I'll try to explain how it's done. With the trailer on the truck:

1 Weigh the front axel of the truck

2 next the rear axel of the truck

3 next the trailer axels
Write these three figures down.

Next step is to weigh the front and rear axels of the truck (seperately of course) without the trailer. This will give you the actual weight of the truck when added together.

Now add the total weight of the front and rear axels of the truck when the trailer was on. Next subtract the weight of the front and rear axels when the trailer was off. This will give you the actual weight the truck is carrying.

Next step is to figure out what the trailer weighs. Add the figure you arrived at for the weight the truck is carrying (in the last step) to the weight of the trailers axels and you have the weight of the trailer.

Example : Truck Front axel unloaded 4000 lbs
Truck Rear axel unloaded 3000 lbs
Total=Truck weight 7000 lbs

Next Step: Truck Front axel loaded 4200 lbs
Truck Rear axel loaded 4000 lbs
Total weight 8200 lbs

Truck loaded weight : 8200 lbs
unloaded weight: 7000 lbs
Difference = 1200 lbs

Weight of trailer axels: 7000 lbs
add difference: 1200 lbs
Trailer weighs 8200 lbs

I believe this is the correct method to figure the weight of the trailer and load on the truck. I'm sure I will hear about it if I goofed.

It would be simpler if you had scales that would give you the total weight. Luckily,I live just a few miles from such a scale. Weighed my truck, went home and hitched up drove back out and weighed them both. Our nearby landfill also has the same type of scales which will handle a semi with no problem.
