weight distribution for 5th wheel?

I know 10% of trailer weight on the hitch seems to be the minimum for standard trailers, what are the recommendations for 5th wheel/gooseneck trailers? I am looking for a gooseneck to haul product, and occaisionally my tractor. Many of the trailers I look at seem to have the axles pretty far to the rear of the trailer, especially if the trailer has a beavertail. 20-24' trailer will be more than adequate for my purposes. I just installed a Reese "Goose" hitch. Thanks, Ray

I think I read that 18% was ideal. If Rusty has 19% that is real close. I know when I started pullin goosenecks you want most of the weight on the axels not up front. I had a jeep that bounced the truck like crazy. I backed it up about 12-14 inches and pulled it like it was'nt even there. This was a 20ft. trailer.

I responded to your other post and saw this one so have some more comments. I kind of wish my trailer deck was 20' rather than 25'. With a 14k gross rating, most of what I do never fills the whole deck. If I do like Okie suggested, I get to light on the truck and the trailer will push. Too heavy and I get beat up with backslap. Real hard to find that happy medium. I have been looking at a trailer out of Alabamba made by a company called Econoline with a tilt deck. They have several variations and the wheel placement looks to more centralized.

Ray,

So long as you don't overload the truck, the more hitch weight you carry, the more stable the trailer will be. You will have less swaying. Notice where the axles are on big rig trailers.
