I run Nitto 295/70/17 and like them. currently my rear tires need replacement. I replace my tires 2 at a time because I shredded a tire, bought two new ones, and made the odd one out a spare.

I am considering going to the 285/70/17 nitto (It's E rated) could I get away with running the smaller tires in the back?

Yes you can as long as you don't run in 4x4 unless it's really really slick. It will throw off the gear ratios front to rear enough to cause expensive damage.

I wouldn't run 4x4 like that even if it were extremely slick. You're taking an awful chance with an expensive transfer case.
