Welding On The Truck

I've got this idea. Yah, I've been thinking again. It would be convenient to design a larger down pipe if I could tack weld the elbows etc. while I have them in place on the truck. This, as one could imagine, eliminate headaches as you know it will fit because its built right on the truck.



Are there any concerns of causing electrical damage to sensitive components? I have always been cautious to remove battery cables and place the grounding clamp directly next to my work when performing such a task on vehicles.

Stick to that practice and you'll be fine. There are no really sesitive systems on a first gen unless you've added radios or something.

Welding on truck

I agree, I work at the G. M. Proving Grounds Fab shop in arizona. We weld on everything and change these cars and trucks all around, some we don't disconnect anything,others we do disconnect the battery. I know if I were working on my truck I would disconnect the battery. Always play it safe,I say

You are on the right track. the battery cables are a good ideal, but not that important (god, I can see my mail box filling), what is , is keeping that ground cable as close as possible. You want that current to go from lead to lead, with the shortest route pssible. Where people get into trouble is attaching the ground to the front or back of the vechial, and allowing the current to pass through the truck and all it's components. By doing this you put everything in danger, sensors, computers, ect. are all commonly thought of items. But belive it or not, the transmission, and even engine can be harmed. I have herd of main bearings being scored, by arcing from crank to bearing, same goes for transmissions. Welding involves large currents, and these need to be controled. Good luck.
