What should be done before welding? Is it still necessary to disconnect the batters?

YES. What are you going to weld. Where? I Would do some serious research before welding on the frame, and the best way to isolate the electronics on those newer rigs! Improper frame welds and improper filler metals are a cause for stress cracking. There are folks out there that can guide you better than I can because that is their area of expertise. GregH

I just bought the truck it had a 5th wheel juryriged in it. The front half was mounted to the bed only. I put a goose neck hitch in it. I want to weld up the holes in the bed. I owen repair shop. I was just wondering with these new computers these trucks have is there any thing new I don't know about that I should worry about.

I've heard about disco'ing the battery, but I've never done it... never had a problem.

If your worried about it, you could disco them though.

I have done some frame welding on mine without any problems and I didn't disconnect the batteries. I just make sure I have a good ground close to the area I am welding. Also make sure that your not welding any hotter than you have to just to help minimize the area that is affected by the heat.

been welding for 40 years and have never unhook a battery before welding and have never had any problems.....

I welded on the back of a dumptruck and blew all the tail lights! Clean a spot close to the weld point for a ground. Disconnect the batteries, unplug the engine computer and the truck computer if it's accessable. I found its better to take the time to unplug than to pay for a new 'puter! :{

At work, the service manuals tell you to do these things before welding. (heavy equipment)

Did I mention that I welded on an excavator, and a week later the ECM went bad? ;)
