Whoever thought that a flimsy steel cap to seal a driveshaft slip yoke was a good idea needs to be stoned... or was when they had that idea.
Had noticed a small leak from that cap a while back thanks to a burning smell after stopping sometimes. Checked fluid level, was fine. Used RTV to seal it, as I've seen some do.
Well, guess I didn't get it good enough. Hadn't noticed a leak in a long time, since the RTV work.
Yesterday I'm driving home on the freeway and noticed a new noise for a couple miles. This was followed by what almost sounded and felt like teeth missing from a ring gear, but not constant. Happened twice and I quickly took the next exit.
Saw nothing amiss externally and driveshaft were tight and such.
Limped home and parked for the night.
This morning I checked fluid, as I thought more and figured "transfer case chain slip" was more like what I heard/experienced. Fluid was nowhere to be found. Opened the drain and a few dribbles came out.
Was gonna refill and drive until a rebuild kit comes in. However, I decided to stick a qtip in the drain hole and found more metal than I'm comfortable seeing.
So, truck's parked and the Jeep with a barely streetable suspension will be my daily for a bit until I get parts and rebuild the case on my truck. That is, if there's not case damage from hot bearings and such.
This just after spending a few grand last weekend to learn our 9 yr old Aussie has untreatable cancer. When it rains it pours.

Appreciate that.
I'm on the hunt for a master overhaul kit. Not used to dealing with this case, so I'm unsure of who to go through. Found Torque King, but never heard of them. Can certainly use a bit of guidance there.
If I can find a reman at a decent price, I might just go that route.
I'm open to suggestions.

Torque King (Quad 4x4) is fine, they also have new ones for 1500-1600 dollars. Since you really didn't see any leaks it could be leaking internally, between it and the transmission.

Nick

The leak was out of the driveshaft slip yoke plug. It just hadn't been burning off like previously.
I see the splatter pattern on the underbody that I had cleaned off in January.

Just took a look. The 29 spline needed for my 68RFE is on backorder. Story of my month LOL

The truck deal sucks, but my heart goes out to you on the dog. We had 13 wonderful years with a lab followed by a year and a half of random strokes, each one taking just a little more out of him until the big one. We all sat with him on the tailgate while the vet put him to sleep. That was a rough one.
Hang in there, enjoy your time with your Aussie while you can.

So, research continues...
The tag on my current tcase is 52123025AB. However, I see there is a 52123025AD for 2011-2012 3500s. Mine is a 2011 3500 CC DRW.
I also found a new AA model online. Suspiciously I haven't found much in reference to the expected AC revision.
Does anyone have a clue what changes were made between AA, AB, and AD? FCA wouldn't spend a cent on the change if not worth it.
If only TransEngineer were still around :)

Thanks. Sent him a msg yesterday. We'll see if he wants to reply (thought he left FCA)
Now, any other ideas for getting a tcase? Seems they're on backorder/out of stock/no longer available. I have messages in to a couple companies.
I have a buddy with a 273F that works. Would have to rebuild with my usable internals, but I don't trust much in there... no clue how long it ran dry before letting me know about it.

Was looking to stay away from used. Especially because these like to damage cases in a front end collision. I might do a remanufactured unit, but would prefer to find new if I can.
I had looked at car part before. Looks line a few remans on there that I may call on tomorrow once places open back up.
Thanks

That's a different tcase, per the part numbers. Mine is a 52123025ab behind the 68rfe auto. Looking at that site, it doesn't list the correct case that I was able to find (only stuff for manual trans, even after clearing the settings).
I got an email reply from TK this morning and he stated that August is when he expects them in. He did list out the parts I can expect to need, following a potential long run-dry situation. He was also wary of getting reman units, like me, as folks will go cheap to increase margin.
I appreciate the assist!

Helps to have a friend who works for a local dealer...
$2087 out the door with arrival in one day.
The cost is a bit, but reasonable enough.
I buy Atlas II transfer cases with some regularity and my cost is higher than that. Retail is topping $3K, although they're MUCH more stout than the 27 the Mopar site states reman on most. The price is apparently employee price, or a little more.
Now to get some moolah to my buddy and get a tcase...

I think that comes with 3 years unlimited miles warranty ?

Hi Thump,
Sorry I can't help you with the transfer case issue, but know how hard it is with the best mate, especially when it is an Aussie ! Hope the mechanical issues get sorted.
regards
Trevor
