Whoever thought that a flimsy steel cap to seal a driveshaft slip yoke was a good idea needs to be stoned... or was when they had that idea.
Had noticed a small leak from that cap a while back thanks to a burning smell after stopping sometimes. Checked fluid level, was fine. Used RTV to seal it, as I've seen some do.
Well, guess I didn't get it good enough. Hadn't noticed a leak in a long time, since the RTV work.
Yesterday I'm driving home on the freeway and noticed a new noise for a couple miles. This was followed by what almost sounded and felt like teeth missing from a ring gear, but not constant. Happened twice and I quickly took the next exit.
Saw nothing amiss externally and driveshaft were tight and such.
Limped home and parked for the night.
This morning I checked fluid, as I thought more and figured "transfer case chain slip" was more like what I heard/experienced. Fluid was nowhere to be found. Opened the drain and a few dribbles came out.
Was gonna refill and drive until a rebuild kit comes in. However, I decided to stick a qtip in the drain hole and found more metal than I'm comfortable seeing.
So, truck's parked and the Jeep with a barely streetable suspension will be my daily for a bit until I get parts and rebuild the case on my truck. That is, if there's not case damage from hot bearings and such.
This just after spending a few grand last weekend to learn our 9 yr old Aussie has untreatable cancer. When it rains it pours.
