Well we pulled the pin today (This coming Monday is my wifes and my 35th anniv. ) and bought a new VW TDI Sportwagen with the DSG transmission. It is mainly for my wife but I'll beg her once in a while to use it. :{ We found a new 2012 with NO sunroof (Yeah) Tornado RED with Black interior. PEPPY car! Last VW wagon we had was bought 30 years ago, a 1980 VW Dasher diesel with a neck snapping 48hp, 1. 5 engine. The new TDI is 140hp and 230 something torque. Broke in they will get 42mpg on the highway. A HAPPY woman makes for a HAPPY man!:-laf

Motorhead, I take it is a Jetta? Nice ride by the way. I am getting 46 plus mpg with my Passat.

I've read that the "Jetta" Sportwagen is actually on the Golf platform and has the Golf nose. I like VWs, have liked them since I was a kid. I've owned several of them in the '60s and '70s including beetles, a dune buggy, and a Baja Bug. Last one I owned was an '86 Golf hatchback. Might own a TDI one of these days. I like the TDI even more.

You are going to love it, I think. The way the trans holds a gear and the motor pulls through it are very surprising to me. On a test drive, I pulled a half mile, 7% grade in sixth gear at 50 and the motor never even thought about downshifting. It didn't have to. It just glided up that hill with absolutely no drama or hint of strain.
I left that test drive very impressed with the knowledge that someday, when I need a smaller car, I will buy one of these.
Happy motoring!!

Congratulations,Motorhead!

I think you'll enjoy your/her new ride. On my test drive of the identical vehicle,I was super impressed with the build quality. The German's seem to kick the sheet metal thickness up a notch and with all the airbags, you should walk away from any accident God forbid.

No moonroof=more headroom which I can never get enough of.

The one I test drove had 1000K of city-customer driven miles on it and it said 38. 7 mpg on the dash. Killer.

I think you will love the car and fuel mileage that the VW TDI will get. The fuel mileage will be better than the reported EPA fuel mileage that VW needs to report. The EPA does not know how to test diesel engine cars to report actual fuel mileage that the car will achieve. My wife consistently sees 36 MPG in town and above 46 MPG on the highway.

When I drive it the fuel mileage will be a little less since I am always either in the sport mode or using the manual shift feature and accelerate hard from a stop light in town. On the highway I will use the drive feature and my highway fuel mileage is the same as hers.

Here are two VW TDI sites you may want to check out if you have not already.

They sure have come a long way havent they? Very first car i owned was a 1985 golf. Non turbo and i gotta admit she was a little shy on power  but i loved that little car my friends would cram in that little hatchback and we could run the country side all day/night on a few bucks of the pink stuff. We had a close friend of the family who owned a rural gas station with an off road pump around back and that was all she ever saw :D. We are currently in the market for a gently used awd passat and i would love to find a tdi but they are very few and far between around here even with the gas engines. Good thing im patient :)

Thanks Guys... We just got home from San Diego picking the Jetta up. 325 miles from home one way. The truck will now be semi retired as the "Main driver" on trips unloaded. It though will still have full command when towing.
My wife loves it so far.....

Motorhead, I predict you are going to love your new ride.

Chronologically I owned:

1983 rabbit

1991 jetta

1980 rabbit

2001 golf (weighted average 51. 5 mpg over 85k miles 80% hwy)

2003 jetta (didn't keep mileage figures)

2003 golf (current daily driver... weighted average a tad over 49 mpg over ~55k miles, 80% hwy)

first three were the old 1. 6 normally aspirated diesels, last three TDIs.

first three were 4 speed, last 3 5 speed manuals)

think i like em?

Advice: Buy VCDS from Ross-

Tech. It is the software to talk to your car. It will be the best TDI-related purchase you ever make.

I think we lasted 1 week before I got the window's tinted it's Much Nicer now not bad bought on june 8th and already has 6500 miles Did I say that I LOVE this little thing :):)

We used to own a 1992 A3 Jetta TDI, 5 speed. For the most part we really loved that car but towards the end the electrical system was getting a little bit goofy and starting to rust on the floorpan. . My worst fuel mileage was 43 mpg and the best was 48. ULSD brought the highway mileage down to 47 mpg.
The bad part was that the intake manifold had to be cleaned every 60,000 miles due to egr pollutants being pumped back into the engine - much like our current CTD's.

So how does VW handle emissions? I thought they were doing regenerations much like the Dodge CTD's. Do they use DEF fluid?

I would like to own another one but hard to justify when diesel is 0. 85 cents higher per gallon in our area right now. My pickup hasn't seen the light of day in weeks... ... .

Yes and No how is that for an answer.

Depending on the model of the VW you will get one of two different emission systems. The Passat and the Touareg will use the DEF to help with emissions. The Jetta, Beetle, Golf and the Jetta Sport Wagon will use a system without the use of DEF

What is the cost and how often do you have to add the DEF if you have that system? that would have to be added to the cost per mile to run the car. Thanks cause we ARE STILL looking at some kind of high (er) mpg car.

Congrats on the TDi! My wife and I just bought a Jetta TDi a couple of months ago to replace her jeep liberty. It was simply the best car purchase I have ever made. The jetta has more than doubled her mpg and that alone has made up the difference in the payment. We just got back from an Oregon coast vacation from Idaho and the TDi averaged 45-46 mpg at 65 mph and along the coast we saw 47. 1 mpg. (All hand calculated) This car has been great so far and would recommend anyone buy a TDi before a Prius or hybrid.

Love my Passat

I have had my Passat for 7 months ( since May) and am getting around 46 mpg at the pump. This is all hand calculated. I have not changed the DEF yet because the dealer is taking care of the first 36 moths of oil changes. From what I can recall from the TDI forum DEF is supposed to last around 15k. Cost is less than 15 bucks per gallon.

I also love the fact that I can get over 700 miles to a tank and a fill up lasts me 2 weeks on average just driving to work.
