Well, it's not a RR exhaust but it'll have to do...

Something was rattling in my stock muffler - I swear I heard something:D - so it had to go. I really want a Rip Rook system but that isn't in the budget right now. :(

A few weeks ago someone posted a link to Air Flow Systems, and I just happened to see that they had a 3"x36" section of exhaust tubing. That started the wheels turning... but when I received the new Summit Racing catalog that had a 3" glasspack I figured it must be a sign. :D

It took about an hour to get the old muffler and twisty pipe cut out, and maybe fifteen minutes to bolt the new section in. The hangers took a couple minutes to fab and weld on but everything went pretty smooth. For once, a project that went according to plan and without any major problems. :)

It's a little louder than before but not objectionable - I normally get home from work after midnight so I didn't think the neighbors would appreciate a straight pipe. ;)

I put a few more pics of the project in my Reader's Rigs album.

I have less than $75 in the whole thing - probably could have done it cheaper if I felt like dealing with the local muffler shop to have them fab up a pipe... shipping is a killer. :p

Cool! I've never seen a glasspack on a diesel before, and it's nice to know they work well.

I like my "muffler free" truck, but all to his own, right? :D

My little design difference in my exhaust is the split... it dumps in front of BOTH back tires, so I get exhaust in "stereo". :D :D :D

I plan on having rip redo my exhaust in the same fashion, but in 4" mandrel bent.

The hard part is finding a glasspack that is big enough - most manufacturers only go up to 2 1/2". This was a new item added to the most recent Summit catalog - right on time, too. :D

If I lived out away from the city I probably would have gone with the straight pipe, but I didn't want it to be too loud out of respect for the neighbors. There are a few idiots around here with the little ricer cars that have the coffee can exhausts, and I hate hearing them racing through the neighborhood. Not to mention the kids on those friggin' 2-stroke scooters they all got for Christmas - about half of them have yanked the mufflers off and it sounds like a swarm of angry bees all friggin' day long.

Wish I lived closer to Rip - wouldn't mind having a custom system bent up somewhere down the road. None of the local exhaust shops do anything bigger than 3"... but they'll put a 3. 5" "kit" on for around $700. :--)

Dan, now that you've had your glasspack on for a while can you tell us what it might have done for you like smoke, fuel mileage, any noticeable difference in performance or boost/egt's? Oh yeah, and the sound too!

Thanks

Tom

Tom - I didn't notice any difference in the amount of smoke or fuel mileage (consistently get 17. 5-18. 5 MPG, 90% in town), and the gauges came after the exhaust, so I can't really give any info there. :(

As far as the sound goes, I like it. :D It's defininely louder than stock but not obnoxious. :) I can really hear it good when there is a block wall along the road or a vehicle next to me, but the rest of the time it isn't that noticable.
