Was driving home from dinner last night, passing someone and hit about 15psi when all of a sudden i hear a "pop" and a loss of power. I take a look back and there is a lot of white smoke poring out of the stacks. Turbo had been on the way out for the last couple of days, so luckily i ordered my super phat shaft 62 at the beginning of the week. Is there a chance that my hx-40 could have caused some other damage? It did not sound like turbo came apart, just a pop and lots of white smoke.

there was oil leaking from the turbo, and mass amounts of white smoke. If it was any other time i would say that an intercooler boot blew off, but the turbo was on its way out. I might as well check them out though while waiting for the new turbo to arrive.

the only real concern is aluminum pieces finding their way into the engine, but the intercooler and grid heaters make pretty good "filters" for that kind of stuff :p

when you swap turbos, you might at least pull the first boot off the cooler and look inside for aluminum dust. I say this because that boot usually has a decent film of oil inside it. Only problem is I THINK that's the boot I replaced w/ a PDR boot... they're a little harder to get on/off! LOL

how many miles are on that truck now? I think I put that turbo on right around 200k... I got the truck w/ 198k, and it wasn't long after that I put the 40 on. It's survived some pretty good abuse. I ran it at 42psi for a long time and then dialed it back to 38 when I ground the plate flat. Wade drove it like an old woman, so that doesn't really count :-laf

well its the exhaust side looks like it took the brunt of the boom. There is a nice bit of oil that is running down the downpipe and leaking out of the the couplers. Took the intake hose off and there is about half an inch of play up and down and back and forth on the turbo.

There are 274,000 miles on it right now and i have driven it pretty hard so it was it was just the 40's time to go. I have been running it around 40psi since i got it.

Guess its time to go super phat.

I had to take the downpipe and flexpipe off to find the exhaust turbine. took the pipe off from the turbo to the intercooler and didn't see any traces of metal, just a bit of oil.

Probbly need to remove the intercooler and wash it out. May be pieces of aluminum compressor wheel in there, and oil. If left coating the intercooler, its efficiency will be greatly reduced, especially after they bake on.

Big bummer. My PDR40 is still tight. Mine is Hobbs switched @ 38psi.

Pls keep us posted on the new turbo. I'd really like to hear your comparison.

thanks,

F

I am taking the intercooler off today and going to give it a good wash, make sure no metal got that way and rinse all the oil out. Just waiting on the new turbo to get here.

wow, you did tear that up good, i think the same thing might have happend to mike's (highfinace97) turbo, i think he is also running a HX-40. popped it on the dyno, and he also got lots of white smoke coming out of the stacks.

Got the 62 in today and should everything up and running tomorrow. What should i set me wastegate at, my head is studded with a marine head gasket.

based on the drive pressure readings on my red truck, I'd say set it around 45psi... try it out up to about 48psi and see how EGT's do compared to 45... if you're going to hit it w/ water/meth, I'd keep the boost low (45) and keep the meth percentage low w/ no o-rings

Got the Super Phat Shaft in:

Got the turbo installed and running just waiting to put the exhaust on and do a few tuning runs to see where the boost is.
