Man is this truck kicking my butt lately...

A couple weeks ago I decided to fix the ABS lights being on, I found both front ABS wires cut, in the mean time I found the calipers bad so it got pads and calipers too. Last week the trans started shifting out of OD at speed. I ordered the trans sensors, the day or two later the "check gauges" light came on and the voltmeter was at zero. So i pulled the batteries and alternator, they tested good. I ordered battery cables from custombatterycables.com and the external voltage regulator kit. While I was at it I decided to fix the A/C stuff that has been broken for 3.5 years, blend doors, evap, heater core all the lines, compressor the whole nine.

Anyway, just needed to vent for a second. Have a great day.

Yea I've had those days. My blend door went under warranty. They replaced the whole shebang. Broke again but works good enough. How do you think the ABS wires got cut?

They were rubbing on the rotors. Last June I replaced the hub bearings, ball joints, front axles etc. I dealt with the ABS lights being on far too long.

Voltmeter in dash to zero means bettery temp sensor is bad. At least on my 04.5

You order stuff without a proper diagnosis, you are wasting money.

Hmmm well, considering it works now with new cables it certainly wasn't a waste of money. Also I'll just let you know that wasn't even in the line of items I was told to replace.

It was batteries, alternator, cables, ECM. I found through research that the voltage regulator could be bypassed and you could retain your stock ECM and save $700'ish dollars.

So, I'm fine with the order of operations I used to remove the issue. Also upgrades are never a waste of money at least as far as I'm concerned.

I think what Ozy's saying is, if the Battery Temp Sensor had been found bad with proper diagnosis, that would have been all that needed to be replaced.

Alas it wasn't the problem so his point is moot

Also he is guessing at a "fix" to the problem without having diagnosed it either. So had I come on here trying to ask questions to determine a cause and he suggested that and I bought it that would have in fact been a waste of money as the problem was in the cables. Namely the garbage factory cable ends but that's neither here nor there.

Calm yourself, Doc. He was telling you his experience on his truck and suggesting that instead of throwing parts at it, do a proper diagnosis. Throwing a Battery Temp Sensor at it on a suggestion from someone could/would be a waste of money, too. I’m glad what you did fixed your problem.

Well he did a band aid with the external regulator.

I'm fine with that, it's out of his pocket.
But don't come back and ask for advice if you just want to hear what you want to hear.

Bought, thus far not installed as it turned out the problem was the cables.

How is it a band-aid? Prior to 1987 all Dodges and all Jeeps prior to 1991 had an external voltage regulator. Id much rather replace a $25 part than an $900 computer.

Find one place in my original post about this topic where I asked for help. Me telling my current situation isn't soliciting advice. I've been working on cars since I was 16 (almost 31 years ago) I've been into Cummins diesel Dodges since I bought my first one in 1996 (I was 21 then).

How exactly is testing batteries and alternator and putting on a set of cables (when I have known I was having issues with my 18 year old factory cables staying tight) not proper diagnosis? Oh maybe you're assuming I didn't jump my batteries with a jumper cable to prove the cables were bad. We all know what assuming does.....

I’ve not one time said you did anything right or wrong. All I’ve done is tried to explain to you what Ozy was trying to tell you. I think you’re the one doing all the assuming here.

I sent some of this specifically to bigpapa and will post it here for everyone to read and digest....

I don't like waiting on parts. I have $3000 worth of stuff on order or already here to fix the charging issue, A/C issue, turbo oil feed line, trans sensors. I want to have everything in hand and contingency plans lined up. It's part of how I've spent the last 23 years of my life in my chosen career. We are taught from day one to plan, and have multiple back up plans in line ready to implement. Waiting in my profession could mean someone doesn't go home to their family, does this apply to my truck not exactly but everything I do is still based off those principles. I won't change my ways for some guy on a forum.

What it ultimately boils down to is unless your paying for the stuff I order it's not your problem nor your business how I spend my money, the only financial conversations I am required to have is with my wife.

Well, I'll be your huckleberry Dok.

Most here on the TDR are fellow truck enthusiasts and do there level best to share experience, knowhow, and technical advise as they have been there / done that. I know in the past decade that they have saved me time and money on my trucks. (time being the most important to me and clearly you).. I see no need to get heated about a comment or suggestion done out of good faith when one could simply ignore it and move on.. As TC says Its your truck and your money so do as you wish, I just would suggest to take a calmer tone because some days, some road, some where.. you may actually wish to have these folks help you out...

Tone is in spoken words not typed, I’m not mad at anyone or anything. However assuming I didn’t work through steps and suggesting I wasted my money is an opinion that should’ve been kept to oneself also. I have had the pleasure already of being on the road needing help from the TDR and had help in a huge way from a guy that I didn’t really care for on here or in person he felt the same about me. If he showed up or called needing help I’d be there in a minute no problem. Me helping someone or not would never be about what I think of you, it’s called DTRT (do the right thing).

I thought we'd been down this road before....

I've been in the parts business for 35 years and I can tell you, I've seen THOUSANDS of dollars wasted because people don't take the time to do proper diagnostics, they don't listen to their parts man, or they take advice from someone else. All any of us was doing was trying to help you. That's what this forum is all about. Any time you post ANYTHING here, whether you're just venting or asking for opinions, you're going to get suggestions from others or others telling you their experiences with a similar problem. If you can't deal with that, I'd suggest you just not post.

Have a Snickers. I hope you don't have any more problems for a while.
