Using lift blocks on a 5th wheel

A friend of mine would like to travel up California's Hwy. 1 (pacific coast hwy. ) til it meets Hwy. 101, then travel on it through Oregon and Washington. He has a Chevy Z-71, 1/2 ton P/U with a 22' Nash bumper-pull trailer. Basically, He was wondering if road conditions, width, allow you to safely pull a trailer up the Pacific Coastline? Have any of you guys done this? Would you, or would you not, recommend doing this trip with a trailer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Joe.

As long as he is not in a hurry it will be OK. There are some areas that he will need to be real careful and drive slow. North of SF where he leaves 101, there is a stretch there that gets a bit curvy, in Sonoma County above Jenner and in Mendocino county there are some areas also that will need to be driven carefully. Then the last stretch before getting back on 101 is curvy and a few steep areas.

The area above Jenner is a LONG way above the ocean so if someone has a problem with heights, they won't like that stretch. My wife is like that and that is why I'm bringing it up.

That area is also very prone to slide problems and the road was closed for several months this past year to repair one. You can check the road conditions before leaving. I'll try to get the web site info and phone # and put it in here.

There will be no problem up the enitre Oregon Coast on 101. It will just be slow traffic at times due to log trucks etc. and tourists if he is going in the summer.

There also will be no problems in Washington State on the coastal highway. Will be great scenery in both states and he will enjoy.

After he gets into Humboldt County take the Avenue of the Giants instead of the freeway. That is the old US101. Much more scenic than the freeway. There is another stretch of the old highway above Orick. It goes thru Prairie Creek State Park. The road is called the Newton Drury Parkway. Be careful of elk in the road on this one.

Don't get in a hurry. There are places where the bark is knocked off the trees by people who hurried.

If you get a chance camp at Humboldt State Park also. I think that was the best campground in the area when we were through there a couple of years ago. The trees dwarfed the dually and camper. Be careful some of those trees are real close to the road. #ad
