I read about this happening with someone elses truck before picking up my truck a month ago. When I got it the fuel pressure gauge did not work. Knowing you can kill an injection pump with low or no fuel pressure I set about getting it working. I got it to read and it showed 16 PSI and it would drop with a heavy throttle to about 5 PSI. The gauge was intermittent and while working on it I accidentally broke off one of the two terminals of the sending unit. I ordered a new sending unit and it was a single terminal unit. You have to put a screw clamp around it and ground the body with that extra wire now. 16 PSI and moderate throttle showed it dropping to 0 PSI and it would recover when I backed off the throttle. A light throttle. This panicked me greatly. It did not take much to drop the pressure to a dangerous range. The truck came with a fass lift pump in the tank. The previous owner is sending me the documentation on it and I am still waiting for it to arrive to identify it. I purchased an ISSPRO mechanical fuel pressure gauge with a snubber. I had a 20 inch fuel rated hose made with a 18th NPT on one end and a 1/4 NPT and a swivel on the other for the snubber. That allowed me to clock the bleed port on the fuel side of the snubber up where it needed to be. The battery tray has a perfect ear on it for mounting said snubber. Using a hypodermic needle I use for restoring emblems, I filled the in cab line with the suggested antifreeze water mix and hooked everything up. I was completely relieved to see 16 PSI on the gauge and no matter what I did with the throttle, I could not get it to go below 10 PSI.
I wanted to post this since fuel pressure matters. So does accuracy. I have always had excellent results with ISSPRO. They even built me a custom pyrometer for a military truck I used to own. So if any readers are considering adding a fuel pressure gauge to their rigs, you might consider a mechanical gauge. The new gauge was a ton cheaper than an injection pump. Glad I could move on to the next fix and put this worry behind me.
