For all the information needed to make my FIRST ( 1130 miles)oil change a breeze. I did what a lot of you all did. First i took the beast out to warm up the oil. Came back, crawled under her and loosened the drain plug with a 3/8 ratchet and a 2" exstention to where i could get my fingers up there to unscrew the plug to where the oil started to drain( not to take the plug out all the way) into a 5 gal. bucket. Got my new strap wrench , put it around the top of the filter and grunted until it broke loose, than put a 1 gal. ziplock baggie around the filter, than spun it off by hand,& it's hot, so be careful. I than filled up my new filter,Fleetguard LF3894,up with oil than reinstalled, by than my oil was drained,so i than put the drain plug back in. I than put 10 qt. of oil back in the motor, started & idled ,rechecked ,right on. I decided, well, i my as well grease the thing,i only found 3 fittings, one on each ball joint, and another on ,i think it's called a stabilizer bar ? Anyway ,thinking there should be more i went to the dealership and talked to the guy (Lou)who works the lub rack,he said thats all there is,we got talkin and he mentioned something about REPLACING DRAIN PLUG WASHER EACH TIME,guess what,I DID'NT,I will next time ,i bought 1 while i was there $4. 50 ea. Sorry for being so long ,i just like sharing. OH,buy the way, what ever oil comes with the truck,it was dirty. Thanks everybody

CAM,

Check out GENO'S finger touch drain valve. Makes the oil change even easier.

PS, I don't know about the 24v but my 97 manual says to let the oil drain for several hours so the oil drains from the injection pump. Being a second shifter', I come home, open the valve, get back to it in the morning.

Cam, glad you "graduated" #ad
Is that big ol oil pan plug scary or what? All the the people in my head where screaming DON'T! when I thought about dropping the plug all the way out. The thought of a Niagra Falls of hot oil made me think twice. I'll bet all 10 quarts would make it in the pan in 10 seconds #ad
Not fun if your using one of those oil containers with the tensy little drain hole...

QRTRHRS, us owners of "advanced" engines don't have to let our oil drain long because our "advanced" injection pumps are lubricated by fuel only. Aren't you jealous???

fast drainage is cool, but ya gotta love having about 50lb of precision mechanism devoted strictly to fuel metering and delivery!
P7100--- when you care enough to pump the very best.

another post says about 10 seconds to "dry" with plug all the way out... closer to 13 #ad

The only reason the dealer advises that you replace the washer at every oil change is so they can charge you $4. 50 at every oil change. Let see, mmm, how many oil changes a day do they do? Multiply that by $4. 50, multiply that my days in month. Adds quite a bit to the bottom line with no expence at all. Remember, every dealer out there, good and bad, are there for one reason, to make money. "It's Always About The Money"

You only real need to change the washer if is damaged or leaks.

dmurdock,

Envious maybe, not jealous. I like the smell of new paint as well as everyone else. Had my share too! Now that I am older and just a hair wiser, I prefer to buy used. Plus, no hesitation on putting that big ol' 4. 5" diameter hole in for Pyschotty.

Now if that 24v was in a four door... .

I change the oil twice a year on my 92 (9 yrs x 2 x $4. 50 = $81) and never have replaced that washer - no leaks. But you sure have to be fast or else that hot oil will run right down you armpit - practise makes perfect.

Hey Guys --- Leave that oily, messy, dirty ole drain plug alone !!! Put on a Amsoil Dual Bypass filter system, fill it with 3000 series 5-30 oil, chg. full flow at 12. 5k, take oil analysis at 19. 5k, change both filters at 20k and go for it. #ad

I am a little more laid back. While the oil is hot I insert the tube from Geno's (will get the new one for th 2001) and start the oil to drain, lift the hood just enough so the light doesn't come on, to remind me the engine has no oil. I come back next morning and the oil filter is cool and not full which makes it simple to remove without spilling oil .

To each their own way. The easy way is have someone else do it but you must trust them they to do it right or you will be paying down the line.
