Hello all,

For my '03 H. O. engine, what are both the max sustained- and short-duration EGTs? After adding an AFE intake and removing the muffler, I know my EGTs have been lowered, but I still need to stay within the proper zones.

Thanks!

You have gauges on a "stock fueled" truck. Just put it on the wood and see how hot it gets. If anything, with the airbox, the temps should be lower than they were stock with the same pulling scenario.

I would assume that DC/Cummins knows how hot these motors will get right from the factory, so if it will exceed 1250 as it is (ours did make ~1380*F towing 15k when stock), then they must be ok with it. Use the upper limit of 1250* or as hot as it will get stock.

Thanks for the answers so far. I hope a few more folks will give their opinions on this still. FYI, I called the Cummins customer service line to get their "official" EGT recommendation, and they wouldn't give one. I was quite surprised at that. They stated they leave it up to the owner to decide what EGT to run one of their engines at. To me, that seems like a sorry way out, considering the expense of these engines and their world-class nature. I'd have thought they'd be only too happy to give a recommendation.
