trans change

manual for 2004.5

I have a 2003 3500 Quad cab 4X2 single axle with a 5 speed manual. I have 3/4 sycronizer grinding. I tow small trailers loaded with motorcycles when I tow, but I expect to be able to tow what ever with this truck.

I have read many threads trying to educate myself about this transmission, and service options. Now I am really confused about what I can do to fix my problem. This past November I visited my local dealer who gave the the choice of a $5000 replacement with a 100K warranty, and a $3000 repair of the transmission with minimal warranty. I need a better option.

This forum saved me $800 on my recent adventures with a transfer pump failure which stranded me roadside returning home from the Sebring 12 hours. Made a subscription seem a real bargain, thanks. I hope y'all can come through again.

You mean 6 speed manual??? If it is the 6 speed manual, it will be the NV5600. Some say that changing the fluid will help with issues like this.

I have the NV5600 in my truck and it is having the issue you describe with the 5-to-6 shift. Sometimes, you can barely tell it, other times it is pretty severe. I will change the fluid when I get time to see if that helps.

What fluid does it have in it? If it has been changed to something other than 75w90, then that may very well be your problem.

The NV4500 is well supported in the aftermarket (unlike the NV5600), so you should have no problem getting it repairs for a fair price. Find a local trans rebuilder or look into one of the forum vendors (Bluemethal, Standard Trans, etc. ), even check the local Diesel shops as some of them are very good at rebuilding all parts of these trucks. Telling people where you are located would allow them to better help you.

If you happen to get to Texas I highly recommend STANDARD TRANSMISSION located in Fort Worth. GREAT people and a good price. You might give them a call and ask for advice.

Are you sure about that? An owner in another thread says he has learned the NV-4500 is becoming obsolete and unsupported by parts sources.
