Hey guys - time for a brake pad replacement but I'm not really sure what to buy. I know the pads that Sam Patterson used to sell are still available but it just takes so dang long to get anything here from the Northwest.

Anyone got any good recommendations? I don't mind paying a higher price for something that will perform well so let's hear it. ;)

Thanks!

I'd like to do a brake upgrade, problem is the factory stuff wont wear fast enough for me.

I have 107K miles and I'm still at over 40% on the pads.

The shoes are still like new. I even adjust then really "tight" every oil change.

EGR all the way, i put on rotors, pads and braided lines about a year ago. They are the best i have ever used. no dust or warping and great stopping power.

Eric,

Lemme drive it for a month! *grin* j/k!

I have found that my 315s on my 3rd Gen are helping

me wear out the factory pads quicker than normal...

HeavyHauler,

We have been playing around with the Powerslot rotor and Hawk Pad combinationa nd have found them to be waaaaay better than anything out there. The rotors don;t warp and the brake power is much better than stock by a long shot. Costs more but then what's new right. Call me if you have questions, I have some on order for mine and have ridden in an Excursion with them and it was a major difference etc.

With all due respect Mark, I'm willing to bet you have not tested Porterfield Carbon/Kevlar pads.

While they make primarily racing brake pads, the R4s compound from Porterfield is streetable and exceptionally great. They are smooth, VERY powerful on the braking, and grip better as they get hotter!

I'd put the Porterfield pad against ANYTHING on the market in all areas of performance (except dusting). They dust a little, but not unreasonably so. It's worth if for the awesome braking performance.

You have to bed them in (get the brakes REALLY hot, then let the heat cycle a couple times, hot, cool, hot, cool ,etc).

Carbon/Kevlar is *THE* brake pad material to have. I'm sure you've noticed that EGR uses carbon/kevlar pads as well??

Say no to metallic or ceramic pads.

While I don't doubt that the Powerslot/Hawk combo is a great setup, I'm really not prepared to spend the $300 or more that it would cost to get everything. Just the rotors are upwards of $250.

So anyway, I may do some looking at the EGR pads. Anyone know any good places to get them?

Thanks for all the help!

Whoa! $170 just for pads!?!? I know I said I'd pay more for something that performed but that's ridiculous! OK, let's think along the lines of something comparable to what you would get at a local parts store.

I'm not in a position to put on brakes that are that good. I had no idea that there were any that were that expensive.

Anyone have any recommendations for something less than $100? LOL, maybe I should change the title of this thread.

how many miles are you getting out of a set of pads? and are you happy with the way they stop? how much did u pay for your last set of pads?

Well I'm running the original pads and my truck has over 97,000 miles on it. That's a pretty good record from my experience. So this will be the first set. If I thought I would be getting the same pads that came on my truck, I would almost just go to the dealer but I know I would be getting something else.

Check out 4 Wheel Parts ad in the offroad mags. Powerslot rotors+pads(carbon-kevlar in prior ads) for most 2nd gens: $248. 00

I have "HEARD" that Performance Friction (same manuf as porterfield) are great pads. They can be had at AutoZone. As for me, I will likely get what ever NAPA is using in their NAPA Gold line. They've always been a great value to me in other vehicles. They'll prolly go on this one.

Hohn,

Felt the same way you do now till I tried them, plus I used the Porterfield on race cars and they just kept failing at the chemical bond between the friction material and the steel surface etc.

Typical Dodge Powerslot and Hawk combo is an average of 290. 00 for two rotors and pads, check the dealer or NAPA it won't be too much difference overall in cost. Call us if you have any questions etc

Thanks for the info. I've never tried the Hawk pads, and if they are better than the P-fields, they must be truly remarkable!

I've never used the race compound pads (R4), just the R4S street compound. I was unaware they were having delamination issues with the pads.

If a pad can equal or exceed the performance I've seen from my Porterfields, then I would be inclined to think it would be a GREAT pad!

I like that the P-fields don't eat rotors and seem to last quite a while even though they are high friction.

I'll give the Hawks a shot when I need brake pads for my CTD. The stupid OEM pads are made of titanium or something, as they JUST DON'T WEAR! It makes me think that the oem units are designed for durability and low dusting at the expense of braking performance.

I'd much rather have a pad that wore out in 40K-50K miles but gave GREAT stopping performance.
