Looks like the much touted valvoline is no longer in production. I am having issues only when its cold and want to try something other than the amsoil ATF i have been using for years.

I did add the hydroboost braking a couple of years back and that is when it started growl in cold weather. I also added a cooler between the steering gear and the powersteering in the return line below the level of the reservoir. It also pukes ps fluid out if it is run cold and growling for short periods of time, like when I pull it into the garage. Of course my power steering pump has a somewhat smaller reservoir than a factory hydraboost truck, so that doesn't help.

If I leave the truck inside and keep it warm I have no issues so I'm leaning towards a fluid change.

So who has a cold weather power steering fluid recommendation?

Other thoughts appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Scott

I have used this in other rigs with good results. But does the manual call for PS fluid or ATF?

AMSOIL - Synthetic Universal Power Steering Fluid (PSF)

In the rigs that call for ATF the Amsoil stuff really out preforms every other fluid I have tried. But it still needs to be flushed every few years, I do my truck in 50K mile intervals. Becuase its brake and PS fluid it gets more abuse than just about every fluid in the rig.

Red Line produces a synthetic that I have started using. So far so good. Item #30404, I had to buy it online because no one stocks it locally. Lots less expensive than RP.

Games,

Have you tested the red line ps fuild in cold weather under 10 degree F? I have the growling ps pump issue in cold weather and need a good fluid to eliminate it.

We used ATF in all of the PS pumps for years. If my memory serves me correctly, ATF was the factory fill back in the 60's, 70's and 80's. So why now does the factory state PS fluid only?

I haven't been to the great white north too much this year. A couple weeks ago it was pretty miserable in central TX with temps in the lower 20s as highs. I had no noises or power steering/brake issues.

Amsoil here. It didn't complete eliminate the growl but it made it much, much better. ATF 4 in my 06 from the factory.

i use amalie universal syntetich and now it have been colder than -30celsius

and it have never been a problem. . only problem is that my 5 yearold batteries is letting go after the fan on first setting and the espa heater on for 1 hour its abit of a hard start

crankingspeed is abit low

Thanks for all the responses. The issue with my truck is it keeps puking fluid after it sits for a few days. I thought maybe it was an aeration problem evidenced by the growling when cold. But it would not make sense that it would only puke after sitting because if it were foaming that dissipate over a few days not intensify.

My current thinking is this is being caused by a slow leak from the nitrogen cansister on the brake booster. Other than the nitrogen I can't see what would displace enough fluid to push it out at the cap.

Thoughts, on this?
