First, I a fairly new to this turbo diesel stuff. I am a old time Turbo Dodge Fan (80's and 90's) and have made some of them into real screamers!

Anyway, I have installed a #8 plate in my 96, and really like it! I am getting 1300* EGTs under LONG pulls above 75 mph, but otherwise I have only one other problem:

I have noticed two things, one, the truck waits to shift gears. A gov spring kit will fix that I am sure. Unless someone has a kit they want to sell, I will be calling Piers next week.

The other thing I dont like- When the converter locks up, this SOB pulls like a freight train, but that will only happen in 4th above 55 mph. I think I would like a switch to lock the converter in both 3rd and 4th gears. I have been told this is not hard to do.

Could someone explain how this is done? I also am not sure what trans I have, It is the 4 speed auto. It is a 1996, one ton 2wd dually. I dont know if it is the 47RH or 47 RE... .

I have a open 3 inch exhaust (mufflers are for pussies). I am thinKing about turning the AFC. Any other mods anyone might suggest to make this a better truck???

Welcome to the website!!

I also have a 96' Dodge CTD. Your truck should have the

47RE Automatic Transmission. If you call Piers he can

either tell you over the phone or send you a copy of how

to install the "mystery switch" to lock-up your transmission.

With reference to the "modifications" on your truck, I would

suggest a "high flow" air filter like a "Scotty I or II" or something

like the AFE MegaCannon. I have a Scotty II now and it really

helped my EGT's when towing. You also may want to consider

some injectors later, such as a set of 215's or the 370 Diamond

B Marine Injectors. The 370's will REALLY wake-up your truck!!

Piers can hook you up with all of this stuff. Also, if are looking

to get way up in the H. P. a new turbo such as Piers' HX-40/16

or putting a 16cm housing on your HX-35 will help power and

keep EGT's lower.

You didn't say what your "budget" was, but what I listed

would be my suggestions to you!!

Hope this has helped you some.

Good luck!!

what's next?

Well I just finally got my TST kit installed, its pretty awesome but like you, I noticed the limitations of the torque converter. (I had the lock-up swith installed before but had problems, see my post under the TC Lockup swith thread) I also noticed how I am running up against the governor almost instantly-- time for 3k GSK, I think that would be a good next step for you too.

I the bomb chronology goes something like this:

1. TST kit

2. new tires

3. AFC kit

4. CAT kit

5. 3k GSK

6. New transmission

etc etc

Yep, you can hook up a mystery lock up switch real easy but I'm tellin' you right now, modifying the transmission is nearer in your future than you might like to think... .

I fully expect the trans to crap out. When it goes, it goes...

But My next question is...

If I install this switch for the lockup per TST site, it mentions that the trans will not downshift until the wire in ungrounded. I was hopeing to install a switch that would allow the trans to shift (and downshift) normally, but with the converter locked full time.

It looks like I will have to disengage the lockup manually every time I slow down, then turn it back on when I accelerate.

Is this correct?

lockup switch

I believe you would be better off installing a BD TorqLok, DDT controller, or the controller from the trans rebuilder you plan to use. Then your trans will lockup on command and still down shift. If you forget to unlock the convertor a couple times and stall the truck you can kiss of the convertor sooner than without the switch. I had the switch but was extra carefull unlock before stopping. ATS told me they will not guarantee the convertor when used with a lockup swich instead of a controller.

I believe the transmission will downshift, but the converter clutch will not unlock.

I never did the switch thing yet.
