Decided its might be time to step up a little... the truck has 170k on it, gauges, and Flux 1s. What would be a good step up into the world? I tow some, probably will never exceed 10k pounds, and probably less than 20k miles per year towing. Figure at this time (with the current issues), I might as well go for broke and either cure it or break it (so I know what to fix).

I was thinking Smarty Jr?? Someone indicated a while ago this was for a completely stock truck (including stock injectors)... true? They also indicated it smoked some under normal cruise (a haze)... has this been resolved?

Any insight? Probably look to buy in the next month or so...

steved,

Have my Smarty JR for almost a year now and have been real satisfied with it. Great response, good pulling power when hooked to the travel trailer. Use it on my 04. 5 with really only intake and mbrp muffler mods. I have the newer updated software on mine and she does smoke somewhat under moderate acceleration on level 1. Don't mind it though. I also pull about 15k miles a year and really like the response and slightly lower egt's. If you do decide JR, Bob Wagner is the man to talk with. :)

The Jr. can now be programmed from your PC to help/eliminate smoke issues. You can choose from 4 optional timing levels and 4 optional torque levels. Within those 4 option levels is stock timing and stock torque.

There are 3 power levels 40, 70, 100 hp. within those power levels you can choose your 4 option timing and torque levels.

I own a Jr. and when I get the new program data downloaded my choice will be power level 2 with Jr. default timing option and stock torque management option for transmission longevity. If it smokes too much I'll decrease timing as needed. I tow a 14,000 lb high profile 5th wheel with a stock auto and in that setting I think will help it live longer.

I also at one point in time used an Edge Juice/Attitude for towing and liked it.

LIke I said I tow but at times the old hot rod guy in me comes out and the Smarty Sr. , Jr. work better for both of my habits. :)

My truck doesn't have torque management...

So the new software doesn't cause a haze during normal driving??

Yes it does, the TM settings will make a big difference in how sensitive the pedal is.

I really don't think you will have much haze while driving, maybe a tad dependent on the settings.

The torque management settings in the Smarty allow the user to configure how sensitive the throttle pedal is. The higher the torque mangement setting the more sensitive the throttle is.

This is completely different then the torque management that was built into some of the dodge pickups. On the third gens the "shift defuel" feature of the Smarty eleminates the Dodge torque management system. This is a totally separate function.

Hope this helps...

Paul

paulb: That makes more sense... torque management has two definitions.

Bob: I'm trying to narrow the choices... SmartyJr is one of the top picks right now.

Will it work or can it be made to work with 40hp sticks??

it is work with stock sticks to trucks producing 1050 HP on 3 different dyno's in 3 states

Smarty is #1 in Cummins Performance

I know the JR works with stock injectors, that's not my concern... I have 40hp F1 injectors and read somewhere (another diesel forum?) that the JR wouldn't work with modified injectors. I have never read anything to say the Jr WILL work with modified injectors... and the correct answer is... Bob?

Not nit-picking, just want to make sure I get the right thing...

Or would an older (used) S04 be a better choice (over a Jr) in my case???
