DAIMLER-BENZ 6-CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE. TYPE 603A, MOTOR NUMBER 603. 950-12-000658. ENGINE IS MOUNTED IN A WOODEN SHIPPING CRATE.

It's an OM603 - 12-valve, I6, 3. 0L - good to about 400hp on stock internals with a big old turbo and increased fueling. Prone to head cracking, but has a very strong bottom end.

The red Benz is running an OM603, the black one is running an OM606 (24-valve version of pretty much the same engine) - both are 400hp cars every day of the week. Our friends in Scandinavia/Europe have done some very interesting things with these engines/cars...

I have to laugh when I see what they paid for it, and what one can be boughten for. Looks like an overhead cam judging by the cover. Bet it would make some power, just might be a little hard to get parts for, and a little far for me.

I wonder if one of these would be a reliable engine for a conversion? I have seen many of these old Merc around and they can be had for quite cheap. What I am thinking is for my work van, I have thought about the Cummins 4cyl, but they usually are pretty expensive... I have seen these cars sell for 500 bucks no kidding. Mainly because the bodys rusted out, but they still run great. I would think with some tweeking, turbo, and intercooler, they would be a good little engine. I dont need my van to be fast, looking more for mileage than anything. Plus, arnt those cars RWD? If I got the car, I would probably just use the transmission also. Those old Mercs probably weighed as much as my van does! :-laf

That is what I was thinking, what could I stick this in?? Maybe I will bit $200 and see if I can pick it up. Heck I could part it out and make that much on it I would guess.

Hey Alpha, I have actually been in a BV206 a couple of times, rough riding things. One of the oil field contractors up here in AK bought 150 used ones to use in Russia on a huge project. We ended up with a couple of them here to use for traveling on the Ice before it was thick enough for trucks.
