Being educated in the goverment schools and still unreconstructioned, the area for your consideration to visit of the "War of Northern Aggression" battle sites are, in Georgia, Kennasaw Mountian or Chickamauga in north Georgia. These are well preserved and instructive. In Alabama, the northern parts are pocketed with skirmish lines. In Mississippi, Shiloh and Vicksburg. Sad but part of our history.

Just 2-3 weeks ago my wife and I went thru the Anderson prison camp. It is near Americus.

We were really touched by it.

A camp with original plans to hold 6,000 but at max count had 33,000 union prisoners in a large meadow. A total of 45,000 went thru it and 15,000 died there.

Now when I am outside in the cold, it has a different meaning!!

And speaking of Andersonville, remember , Lincoln at that time refused to exchanged the prisoners as he had previous to that time. Also, the internes had to eat the same thing the guards did. Cornbread. What a meal for a person that didn't even know what it was. You can remember you "great" president for those men dyings. Dysentery is a very deadly thing.

I also am very into Civil War sites and the history of. As a matter of fact, I'm watching the Blue & the Gray right now! I live not far from Gettysburg and plan on going this summer to do a "Civil War Loop" as my wife calls it! We're visiting Antietim, Fredrick, Bull Run, and ending in Gettysburg. I would like to end up in Gettysburg on the 1st of July for the 3 day re-enactment. I've never been to Andersonville yet but it's on my list. :D

Chickamauga battlefield in no. GA, near Rossville has one of the best museums of US military firearms you'll see.

140 years later and we're still occupied ;)

BWillard... ... ... . When you go to Fredricksburg, be sure to go to the hill Gen. Lee controled the southern part of the battle. It really gives a good view of the town and a good idea what it took for anything of that nature to be controled. I was almost half a day there. Then off the Chancellorsville. .

Enjoy.

We spent the better part of a day (unplanned) going through the museum in Vicksburg while on a cross-country trip a few years back. Very interesting place.

Next Memorial Day we are heading to Ft Sumter then will head back to Texas through Georgia, SC, AL, MI.

That's gotta be quite a detour. I wouldn't expect to find much on the MICHIGAN leg of that trip! ;)

MI = Michigan

MN = Minnesota

MS = Mississippi

Otherwise, that sounds like a neat trip. I wouldn't mind doing it myself some day.

Carthage, Missouri

We had the opportunity to stay in Carthage, Missouri last summer. There is a Civil war museum there that we found interesting. If you are RV'ing The Big Red Barn RV park is very nice and the folks were very friendly there. We would recommend it highly. The battle of Carthage is billed as the first battleground of the civil war.

Have a great trip.

:cool:

:-laf Good catch!!! Ok, MS

I'm making notes, keep it up.

Agreed on the correct title being "War of Northern agression", "Civil War" is a misnomer.

Understand about Ole (dis)Honest Abe and the prisoner exchange refusal. If I remember at the end the Union was offered it's POW's for FREE and they refused AND later used the bodies for propaganda.

Lets not even start on sherman's march... I dont have enough respect for sherman to capitalize his name.

If you have time and want to stop near Atlanta, GA, at Stone Mountain Park they have a campground. If you have never heard of St. Mtn, it's where they have carved a granite wall with Civil War Generals. Same guy I believe that did Mt. Rushmore? Look for it on the internet. St. Mtn used to be a place the KKK had big cross burnings, but that's not politically correct anymore.

My boss takes part in the reinactments. We tell him not to kill his grandfather!!!!! SNOKING

My dad gives his coworkers endless grief about this. He just can't understand why they would want to practice failure time and time again.

He offers to be the north each year, but they said until they can use real bullets again, to stay home. :eek:

I guess that's what happens when an opinionated New Yorker moves to north Georgia. I am afraid I'll be dragged out there with him everytime I visit.

Back in 96 on our way to and from the Olypmics in Atlanta we visited several battlefields. Franklin, Chattanooga, Chickamagua, Kenasaw Mtn. , Ft. Donaldson (didn't see much there as it was flooded), Corinth, Island No. 10, and a few small museums we spotted along the way. We also saw the laser show at Stone Mtn. during our stay in Atlanta. We just recently (end of OCT. ) got back from the reenactment at the battle of Franklin/Spring Hill/Nashville. The Franklin, Shilo, Cattanooga, and Chickamagua sites I would say are a must visit if your in the area. Never visited Shilo myself but maybe someday I will.

There is suppose to be a ceremony of some sorts in Memphis next Memorial Day for the rededication (or something like that) for a Union solider. I cant recall the whole story about it at the moment but I doubt most of you guys have much interest in it as you still believe your in occupied territory.

Nathan

PS: kinda surprised you guys even call it Memorial Day or recognize it as it was started by the GAR to remember Union veterans.
