I believe that they added the four wheel disk brakes to the 2001. 5, mine has 'em. I'm not sure what else.

Sounds to me that you have a 2001. 5. Do you have the four wheel disk brakes ? Mine was ordered on 5AUG00 and shipped on 9OCT00.

Dodge shut down production of the Rams sometime around mid summer 2000 (June/July). When they started up again, they were 2001½ model year. 4 wheel disc brakes were the biggest change. Another is on the sport models. No more decals. Back to the chrome raised emblems on the doors for model call out, and a sport badge on the rear pillar that says "sport" in place of the Laramie badge. Any more than that, I am not sure. I think most of it has to do with production number per year as far as the EPA is concerned on fuel economy for the entire Company. That is why, I have heard, that the 2001's began being made 01/01/2000, because they had already sold more 2000's than anticipated in late '99. Because the Ram's in general do not get the best of mpg's, the scale was being tilted as not enough Neon's and other models were being sold, so they change a few things and introduce it again as a new model. May not be true, but think that it probably is.

I have read some posts about people here thinking the 2001. 5s had the HX35 turbo, instead of the HY35 turbo. I do have a 2001. 5 with disk brakes, but I have the HY35 (smaller) turbo on my truck. So either that rumor is not true or perhaps my truck was an unfortunate one that got the smaller turbo housing.

As far as turbos my understanding is that the HX35 turbo is on the ETH/DEE trucks. It is not a 2001 VS 2001. 5 change. Hale, you would have the HY turbo because you have the auto. I have a 2001. 5 ETH/DEE. The diffents I have seen in comparison with the 1998. 5 that it is replacing are the 4-wheel disc brakes, the lack of the protective plastic on the tail gate and the child seat anchors on the top of the back seat. I do have the HX35 turbo but that is because of the HO engine.
I have read a couple of threads in the 24 valve forum over the last couple of months.

Well, I crawled under the truck. Guess what? It's a 2001. 5. It does have rear disc brakes. I was gonna be really p**sed off if it didn't. I thought that all 2001 rams had disc brakes. The one I almost bought came off the car carrier while I was there in December. (it didn't have power seats so I didn't buy it). Never would have dreamed that the one I did buy could have still had those sucky drum brakes.

quadzilla is pertty close to what happened, except as far as Chrysler is concerned there is no such animal as a 2001. 5. It is actually the 2001 model. The 2001 model built from Jan 1 2000 to July 2000 is actually a 2000 with some very minor changes, due to CAFE rules they called them 2001's

The late 2001's also have a servoless speed control. The early 2001's (and previous models) used a servo.
