What Do I Have To Look Forward Too?

For the last 6 years I have paying attention to the 2nd generation forum as I owned at 2001 CTD.



Now I own a 2006 CTD 2500 and am wondering about anything in particular that I need to look out for? After perusing the forum I don't see any common thread like there was on the 2001 (LP/VP44).



Any info would be appreciated.

If you leave it stock, pretty much just ball joints and u-joints that fail before most of us think they should. I have owned a bunch of these trucks now and the drivetrains are otherwise very solid and reliable.

Your lift pump is in the fuel tank, so that pretty much eliminates one major opportunity for failure.

I agree with what BHolm says - u-joints seem to last 60-80k for lots of people.

Keep the fuel system clean.

I agree. They seem very well thought out and have proven to be more reliable overall than second gens... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . I still like my old 12 valves best though. My only gripe about my current truck is something that I had total control over... ... ... ... . where it was made, St Louis. I should have gotten a truck made in Saltillo, Mexico as it is proven fact that they have a higher level of quality and workmanship south of the border. My last two prior 3rd gens were flawless inside and out but my latest "last" truck is far from perfect. My complaints are mainly body related but also include a few axle, and hose type problems. I still love this truck though. I just got an EZ and put on it for a rode trip. 21. 5 mpg mixed town and road type driving, I can't complain about that! Highway was showing up to 25 and town was showing 16.

Ac and blend doors have been a issue.

Not much of an "issue", but if you ever have a bulb burn out, and you start getting the lamp out chime, you'll want to take a . 45 to the dash... .



Like Ryan said, buy good fuel from a known location and keep good fuel filters in it every 10-15,000. At the high pressures the injectors run, little tiny contaminants will eat them alive... .



And when it comes time to replace your u-joints, there are plenty of aftermarket greaseable ones that you can choose over the factory ones.

And before you ask about the clunk of the A/C compressor or the honking when backing with the door open... . those ARE common threads and are both normal
