Hi,

Today i went to my Favorite ATV ridinga area and on the way home Stoped At Hardees to get a bite to eat Close to a hundred miles round trip when we were getting ready to leave Hardees i Cranked the truck and the starter dident disengage i tried to turn the key off but that dident do anything and it wouldent let me shift into Gear so i Poped the hood Thinking i would disconnect the battery but when i raised the hood it disengaged and ran fine.

It remained engaged for about 1 minuite.

What would cause this?

What should i do if this happens again?

Should i replace the starter? The truck has 140,000 Miles on it.

Thanks in aadvance for the help.

Starter solenoid contacts most likely. Get the numbers off the starter and get new contacts. Someone on here may chime in with the part numbers for the contacts, but you can use the numbers on the starter to get them. Pretty easy to change. Disconnect the batteries. Remove the two wires from the starter solenoid. You need a 12 point 10mm wrench or socket for the starter attachment screws. When you take the back off the solenoid you will see how to change them. It's a good idea to take one of the old contacts to the parts store to make sure you get the right ones.

Bill, where are ya Bud??

illflem usually chimes in with the company that sells the rebuild kit. Glad you asked cause I need to order a set myself. Mine just started doing.

Luckily, mine is a 5 speed and I can just put in first, let out he clutch and kill the engine.

There was a place in Arizona that many were using, $35 for a kit that included more than you need. Any auto electric shop or Napa can get the contacts you need for $6-10 each, just take your starter or the numbers off in.

Mine acted up at Whataburger just as I got to the pick up window. What an awful noise. I had the $50. 00 kit out of Arizona put on. Has not occurred since.

Been there done that, its starter solinoid contacts as mentioned above. Best bet is disconnect batteries when it does that and then go to your local starter/ alternater rebuilder and get the contacts

From a previous post.

Diesel Electric Service Co. , Inc. Casa Grande, AZ (800) 836-8231 or (520) 836-8231. Cost for the kit was $26. 33 + 8. 50 S&H.

"Make sure that when you reinstall the fixed contacts, you let both of them bottom out against the housing insulator so they will be perfectly level before you tighten up the mounting bolt studs in the elongated slots. This will prevent one side of the contact hitting the movable contact and not the entire surface. If you don't, one side or edge won't be able to carry the current required to crank the engine and will burn prematurely. "

Hope this helps.
