Im looking @ a 3rd gen truck for a buddy of mine. Its a 2003 3500 SRW. Is there anything I should look out for? transmission preference? Known engine problems? Example: 2nd gen look out for 53 block

Early 2003's non-HO engines came with the 47RE auto. The 48RE with the HO engine came out around mid year. The non-HO engines with the manual transmission came with the NV4500 5 speed were as the HO engines have the NV5600 six speed. 48RE or NV5600 are preferred.

I had an '03 QC SB 4x4 with the 48re and HO engine. That was an awesome truck. Klenger hit the high points, I would look for an HO engine just becuase I don't bomb my trucks. The stronger transmission's though (48re and 5600) are definately something I would want. The tag on the valve cover will give you the HP rating, the HO is 305hp, that is the one I would be looking for. The 305hp engine ensures that you get a good transmission. Front ball joints and driveshaft u-joints are about the only issues, nothing major.
