My friend has a 07. 5 6. 7 auto he shut it down the other night and he had a hot smell. Didnt think much of it. the next day he starts it cold (20*F)gose doen the road and it has no power and got so bad he pulled over and it died. he starts it back up and it is fine, normal, runs great, We thought it was in the middle of a regen when he shut it down the night before maybe? No engine lite and all is good now but wondering what caused this issue?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Dave

He should pull the codes and make sure everything is OK. I can't imagine that it fixed itself.

My 2010 doesn't (or hasn't) given me a message that it is in regen. I'm at 15,500 miles so I imagine it has done one. When I got home from work last week, the engine smelled hot and was doing a lot of the cool down "popping" especially on the passenger side. I thought it might have been in regen but had no way of knowing.

Take it to your nearest Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, etc and they will read your DTCs for you. Then post for all to review, there are several excellent Cummins mechanics on TDR that will chime in. Good luck!

Unless the new Gen IV trucks have something new the ISB6. 7s don't have any indicators. There is no gauge or light to tell you a regeneration is being performed.

Without gauges there is no way other than sounds and smells to know when your truck is in a regen and then only at idle or slow speed operation. At 15k miles your truck has performed many regenerations but at highway cruise speed you'll never know it.

As you gain experience and familiarity with the truck you should be able to detect a slight exhaust rumble during idle and off-idle and a slight change in throttle pedal response during regens.

With gauges I can see the increased EGT which indicates regen. I will occasionally hear the odd exhaust rumble and glance at the EGT gauge to confirm a regen.

The only time I've seen a message is when the DPF is at 80% full and the EVIC saggests to drive at over 50MPH until the regen cycle completes. I think this occurs when the DPF is full and not for normal regen cycles.
