MY engine light has came on, and the overhead shows the warning of 70% full than it works it's way to 100% in about 45 minutes. I might drive 5 miles or 500 and it will re-cycle thur it again. I have noticed during the last few hundred miles that I am blowing a small amount of black smoke on take off and I can send a nice cloud when I punch it. The perform service warning has came on also, but my dealership has yet been able to provide me with a EGR Filter. The truck has 130k on it and 99% of it has been highway driving usally in the tow haul mode. Truck has been great up to this point and only the MPG could be improved a bit. This problem has me scratching my head...:confused:

Your DPF is ruined for sure. You should not have any black smoke from the exhaust. May have other trouble as well. Do you know what software is in it? Last time (date) it was flashed?

Thats just what they said, which isn't a warm fuzzy at $3500, but I'm not too happy with the dealership..... Found one at a truck salvage with 52 miles on it and looks like I'm going that way.

You're coming up on the maintenance interval for the EGR cooler and valve cleaning as well as the CCV filter you mentioned... not sure if the $3500 had the cleaning and filter baked in or not. But, like sag2 said, your DPF is toast, so if the dealer can upgrade your flash and do the maintenance and you can provide a good DPF you may be good to roll after that.

I would be cautious of the salvaged truck, remember the DPF is of a ceramic type material and can be broken from the impact if the truck has had a hard impact.

Thanks for those thought's... The perform service message has came on,and according to the little book in the glove box it notes about the EGR Cooler. and oh course the service manager basicialy was insulted that I know more about the 6. 7 then he did. I didn't think of the impact on the DPF but this guy will do me right. I might be like that Aussie that used a power washer. Could be cheaper than 3500 $$$ . Thanks all for any info

Because black smoke is passing past the DPF it's damaged... . you need to understand that... . just washing it will clean it but not repair the damage to the ceramic material itself... .

I'm not understanding the damage part, being full with ash and causing blow by is from being full of ash and not something broke is it ??? all i know is that it's alot more costly than it should be. the dealership wants almost $1400 to install the $1300 filter and last time I looked under the truck there was only 6 nuts and bolts that held it together. Maybe I'm missing something here ???

The DPF is cracked or has a hole through from one side to the other. If it is good, NO smoke should come out the tail pipe. If you don't mind the smoke and it is on your dime, the DPF should still function in the majority of it's surface area.

Just wondering... if you are already at 130k miles, why bother replacing the dpf? Get one of the dpf delete kits along with one of the egr mods mentioned elsewhere here, and end up with more power and better mileage.
