Regen is the burn off of carbon particles in the DPF (diesel particle filter). It ocurs when the Delta pressure sensor pick up higher than normal pressure in the unit and the ECM commands an exhaust fuel injector or the cylinder injectors to add slightly more fuel causing the exhaust in the Cat to heat up. This heat burns off contaminants.
If you have an '08 or newer truck (or '07?), about the only monitoring you get is a warning if it's been too long since the truck regenerated.
This is a new thing for the "ultra clean diesels"
The '01 in your sig doesnt have it. I personaly say be thankfull. I could go forever on this, but big thing to me with DPF is cost. EPA in general has put the modern diesel in about the same shape as a late 70's auto gas engine. Oh, well, at least the layman's image of that dirty, stinky, oil drippin' diesel is finally getting cleaned up.
