one of the codes my truck is setting is p1690 sounds like something with the Crank Position Sensor from the searches I did here. What does this sensor do?

the crank position sensor measures the RPM's of the truck via the crank, the ECM uses this data for almost everything from fuel timing to making your tach function. this is a very critical sensor. I am sure someone else can expound upon this in greater detail but i hope this helps;)

My problem is I probably cant work on it til saturday, and i need to drive it for approx. 500 miles this week. Will I do any damage to the truck?

If I remember correctly (I havent worked on ISB1's for a while)

That sensor in question is a Cam position sensor.

98. 5-00 had the crank position sensor, that was an actual sensor that read a tone wheel on the crank.

The sensor on your truck reads a plate attached to the cam that is installed behind the cam gear.

This sensor is located on the gear housing near the fuel pump.

Running with this sensor malfunctioning should be protected by the ECM and if it senses something it cant handle it should throw your truck into a limp mode before doing any damage.

You'll know when it isnt running right!

I agree

The "02 doesn't have a crank position sensor. The cam sensor is above the power steering pump and below the VP44. Hard to get to.

Well took the truck into today and the damn codes werent flashing. They find a whole bunch of other junk on my ECM and cleared it out. Good news is its running fine now. I stripped of the FMS when I took it in and boy does this thing feel like its been nutered without it!
