Any good gear oil will work in the NP205, but I would avoid the ATF in that particular unit. For milder climates, the 75w-90 works great, less drag... . I run 85w-140 in mine, but that's because summer temps around here get well over 100*. I've got one in my '76 Power Wagon I run straight TRC 200w in..... I really ought to rebuild that thing.....

You can look through the Ultimate First Gen thread and see Bschwarzli's rebuild of his. There is not an internal pump like the later models, so it uses gear oil instead of ATF, and are one of the toughest units available out there!
The auto A518 is spec'ed for Mopar ATF Type 7176. I doubt you'll find that in any stores since that spec is over 20 years old... . Try the ATF+4. It's a good fluid, given how cheap most OEM stuff is made..... If you removed the valve body and drained all the galleys, it'll proabably need close to 8qts... . If it was just a filter change, then only 4-6qts... .
Bob, the guys I've talked to that run the older NP205 units up in Alaska, such as the guys in the National Park system, they run straight 50w Chevron, I think it is. It's the same I run in the KW's 15spd Eaton, I'd have to go look it up. It's designed to carry more heat away from the gears and still lube the gears and bearings without excessive drag, which helps with shifting, especially in colder climates... ... . I know even in 100+* heat, my transmission temps use to run up close to 200(sometimes a little over with a heavy load and head wind) with good 85w140... with the 50w it runs closer to 180.
