What fluid is compatible with Mopar for the nv5600? I hate to pay the high price for mopar, but that would be cheaper than ruining my transmission.

Please Help

You will get a lot of opinions on this one. After a transmission failure last fall I went back to the Mopar oil. I had been using Redline MTL but it does not have the Mopar spec and the warranty on the Reman transmission specifies the oil must have the Mopar spec. A little extra cost on oil is way cheaper than a transmission.

Stick with the OEM (Mopar), it's less the 6 qts. It seems reasonable to me (cost). I just changed mine. The oil that came out was in there for over 70K. I could'nt tell any difference between the oil that came out and the new stuff I poured in.

I used some Pennzoil Synchromesh in my 03. It is supposedly the supplier to Chrysler. It meets the Chrysler specs. It worked the same as the Mopar stuff. I found it at NAPA.

I later switched to the Amsoil MTF and it seemed to be a bit smoother. IIRC, the Amsoil also meets Chrysler specs.

Never had any problems with the NV5600 in over 500k miles.

I used nothing but Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid in my '01 Ram w/NV-5600 six speed. It met MOPAR specs and could be purchased at any Autozone store much cheaper than MOPAR fluid from a dealer.

The six speed worked great until I let it get a bit low on fluid and pulled a heavy fifth wheel in stop and go CA freeway traffic all the way from Riverside county to a dealer west of LA. It had about 302,000 miles when Standard Transmission in Fort Worth rebuilt it.

The guy I bought my truck from told me he used another type of fluid (redline possibly, i can't remember) and he then rebuilt the 5600 because of it.

I was told by him to ONLY use MOPAR fluid.

Sometimes when mine gets warm 1st and reverse can be a bit hard to get into. Other than shifting like a truck and wishing I had more of OD in 6th, the 5600 has treated me well.

I'm sure that most owners realize that MOPAR doesn't refine, blend, or bottle manual transmission lube or any other lubricant. MOPAR doesn't (didn't) manufacture the NV-5600 transmission either.

One of the major oil companies blends the lube oil to MOPAR or New Venture engineer's specs and fills the bottles with MOPAR logo on it.

Pennzoil may, or may not, be the oil company that blends and bottles it for MOPAR. In any case, any big name product that states on the bottle that it meets MOPAR specs and lists the MOPAR spec number is essentially the same and will perform as well as MOPAR transmission lube.

Pennzoil from Autozone is much less expensive than MOPAR oil across the parts counter at a Dodge dealer.

I changed mine to the Amsoil when it had about 100K miles on the original. The original oil looked nice an clean when I drained it out. I noticed no difference in shifting after the change.
