I have 600 with 9000 miles. Started having rough idle and what sounds like injector knock/noise about a week ago.

I am going to change and drain the fuel filter tomorrow. I have seen many posts recommending fuel additive as often as every tank. I do a lot of stop/go and short trip driving, which I assume can lead to injector clogging.

Will fuel additive help this issue and what do you recommend for additive and frequency.

Thanks for any info.

Redline 85 Plus... .

I picked up 1mpg, the engine smokes a lot less, runs quieter, etc etc..... It also has a lot of lubricity to it (according to Redline, anyway).

This is really good stuff, and it's not 80% diesel like a lot of other additives. It smells nothing like diesel.

It's not easy to find, so I order it by the case.

If you don't want the Redline, I'd recommend Stanadyne (blue label).

I've given up on power service-- it's mostly diesel fuel!

I'm using B20 (20% biodiesel) when ever I can find it. Biodiesel is a good cleaner and has higher lubricity and higher cetane than #2. It makes my engine run smoother with perhaps a slight improvement in fuel economy. I use Standyne performance formula when biodiesel is unavailable.

Been using the Standyne Performance Formula since the first one in had in 91.

Use it in the VW and tractors.

I've used Stanadyne Performance Formula since I turned 10k. MPG up a little, can't tell much difference anywhere else. I use 8 ounces in every tank.

Thanks for the feed back everyone.

I have a local wholesaler/dealer in Houston for Standyne Performance Formula. I will go Monday and buy a supply. Guess I will plan on 8 ounces every tank also and see if I can tell any difference after 4 or 5 tanks.

As the fuel pressure in the rail goes up... and the holes in the injectors get smaller I'd be worried about any type of cleanger... The only product I use is in the winter when I drive fuel from a warm climate to a cold one and its not winterized down... than I add a product to deal with that... .

There just isn't a lot of stuff approved for Cummins and DC that will pass through the plastics and other materials and not cause a problem... ...

Just my 2 cents worth... so to speak...

Jim

Scheid Diesel has the 8 oz - One Shot bottles of Stanadyne available. I like the 'One Shot' bottles... just dump the whole thing in the tank and fill 'er up! They were running a special where you buy 6 bottles for the price of 5 - don't know if the special is still going on. Worth checking it out - very fast shipping too...

My 600 has intermittent knocks and cold "clacks" at low speeds which leads me to believe that the 600 injectors are prone to fouling more than one thinks. With all of the the infant mortality of injectors on this engine, including mine, I'm going to try some chemicals before running back to the dealer. I'm looking for Valvoline Synpower as was mentioned in roperteacher's thread. If anybody has an online source for it, please forward it to me.

I've been using Hammerdown #1500 for 3500 miles now. Started using it when I got the dreaded knocking, most predominant at idle, in drive. Engine has been quiet since.

I have seen Valvoline Synpower at several places. GO online to Valvoline.com and look under additives, then diesel. Should help you find it. You can type in your zip code and see all the carriers in your area. The Cummins logo is right on the bottle!

I tried differant brands on THREE trucks I've owned over the years. Never could tell any differance in squat. I've got friends that never have used anything with many more miles then mine.

IMO, fuel additives are like the oujie (sp) board. If you believe in them they will work, if you don't, they won't ;)
