I really would like to find out what happened to the clutch or drivline on my truck before I put it back together,(98 5 speed CTD 200. 000 miles) I have a new SBC 13 in clutch and PP . I just herd from the trans shop after they tore the trans completely down that there was nothing wrong with it (NV4500) Iv taken the axles out and the diff cover off. cant see anything wrong in the diff and the fluid was like new ,no shavings or anything else in it. What happened was I pulled away from a stop signe with a 7000 lb trailer. When I shifted to second I lost all gears and it put off a loud grinding sound that appeared to be comming from the bellhousing. It would not grind in nutral but as soon as it was put in any gear it would grind as soon as the clutch was let out. The truck would not move. I took the old clutch to SBC . They said it wasnt slipping or broke. The only thing I can think of at this piont is the clutch suddenly let go and I didnt slip-grind it enough for it to show. This is kind hard for me to belive because of the tremendious noise it made. Total grind time was maby 4-5 seconds. I had the trans shop inspect the drive shafts and install new U joints and carrier bearring. The drive shafts were fine. The trans will done tommorow and I have to get this back on the road. I simply dont know where else to look . any suggestions ? Thanks Otis :confused: :--) :-{}

Otis:

I am only guessing here as your sig doesn't say wether or not your truck is a 4wd or 2wd, but, if it is a 4wd then I would think that you may have bumped the transfer case shifter (or something on the cab floor) causing the T-case shifter to move partially into or out of gear.

If the truck is a 2wd then I would suspect that one of the clutch springs may have come out of its socket and then gone back in. I have had a similar thing happen to my truck and the next time it did it I ended up tearing the center hub out of the clutch :{ resulting in instant no-go.

Just my . 02.
