My truck has the little HY35 turbo. If I install an HX35w, nothing else, no chip, just the turbo change, what will happen? Will I have increased boost or just cooler boost? Will the reduction of air temp result in the ECM allowing more fuel? If I do get more boost will that change any aspect of the drivability of my truck as far as the ECM is concerned? Or will i just have a bigger turbo, more power, and cooler EGT's?

I would say the only thing you would gain is a wee bit of turbo lag. No power increases. Without any extra fuel no power will be gained. Your EGT's may be a bit lower but on a stock truck does it really matter?

Johns right only reason you would need a bigger turbocharger, is if you added more fuel. Be careful your treading near a slippery slope. Next thing you know the trannys slipping and your scrambling for DTTs phone number. :{

Yes I do have a comp box on EZ mode right now. I was asking because I wanted to make sure that in a stock condition I wouldn't be throwing any codes or having any other problems that would be caused by just changing the turbo. I fully intend to tap my pump after the trans is done. I have one foot firmly on that aforementioned slope as we speak! I like to make changes slowly and one at a time, then live with them for a while to make sure they are not causing any other problems, hence my initial question. So assuming all else is stock changing to a HX won't give my truck a fit then? I am still learning how all these different modifications can cause unintended results if not done in the right manner or order and I just want to make sure I always get improvements without having hidden gremlins poke their nasty little heads out from under my hood.

So you are adding more fuel, the fueling box will give you more fuel when you tap the wire. If this is the case you will need more air. You could start by disabling the wastegate improving the air filter removing the muffler. If EGTs are too high over 1400 you will need more air an HX35 w/12cm housing, will spool well and move enough air.

all new 2 me,just a thought,i would try to go with somthing bigger. turbos rnt cheep and if u go with more power later then u will need again another turbo. if u already have it fine but if it was me i would give jr adkins a call i have one of his switzers and it spools as good as a hy and is about the same as a hx-40 so it is good to about 450 hp,its about 900 dollars, thats what i have its good. it could be run stock or all out and is waistgated at about 42 lbs, just a thought.

Just went threw this ,,,,

For 1 thing the hy Charger With the waste gate 100% closed and a Tapped Comp I was getting 50# of boost ... . Efficiency range of the HX is the same for the HY which is around 23# so I had 25# of nothing but drive Pressure ,Nothing but HURT!

IMHO running an HY non Wastegated on any thing is BAD its a little instaspool

Here is a side by side pick of an hy and an hx

#ad

The hx35 is a major PERFORMANCE GAin for the HY equipt truck .

So far on my truck ive had

hy35 which is a 9 CM Ext Housing (35 # normal drivng)

Bombed Non waste gated hx35 with a 21CM ext Housing To much lag even with the Comp Tapped 5x5 and a full blown Catcher (35 # WOT UPHILL 5x5 Catcher About 100MPH)

Now resides a HX35 12 Cm and my truck is just like I want it ..... not much lag and around 35 psi WOT 5x5 upgrade It is waste gated (35# when you want it)

Ditch the Hy and pick up an HX I can get a used HX35 for $150 but you will have to wait in line .

if your willing to try the HX35 21 Cm Contact me and we can work something out

The 21Cm ext housing has been modded to fit on our trucks The Bolt Style instead of the clamp style .

Here is some info Ive gathered resently and I threw together a Install guide so you can see just how easy it is to Swap Chargers.

Mine has the HX35 and Im VERY HAPPY with it. The " turbo lag" isnt really noticeable. Im running 70 MPH and still running about 650-700 in EGT temps. BTW that is with the comp on 5X5.

Hey Dave, sorry to hear you are having troubles, I look to your truck as my model. I don't want to bother Blair with simple questions now that he is in the refinery business! :p

Huff and Patcarman, I've been toying with all of your ideas also and may go that route after I collect enough info regarding all the hows and whys.

DieselMinded, I actually have followed your thread about your turbo modifications and thank you for the info. I don't think I want or need a 21 at this point. I just bought a new hx35w with the exhaust manifold from another TDR member. It only has 100 miles on it. I think I'll start there and do my trans, tap my pump and go from there.

Thanks to all for the help

Yeah Dave this really sucks... . talked to Blair today and we are going to start brainstorming this problem this weekend ( his brains my storming! )

I am certain that Blair would not mind your questions, he's a helluva good guy!

1st mod I did

The first engine mod after guages ect. I did on my 02 with 1000 mi was a PDR HX 35 -12 housing. In stock form my truck could reach 1300 degrees exhaust temp. so I put the PDR h35. Dropped 100-150 degrees. The spool up was quicker than stock!!!!!! L ater I did an EZ, and 4" exhaust.

I would reccomend to anyone with an HY equipped truck is to toss it and go with at least the PDR hx 35- 12 housing you will love it!!!!!!!

Do you tow anything? if so, what are your EGT's pulling grades with the PDR HX 35.

temp

When the truck was stock it would go to 1300 under the right conditions unloaded. (ie lugging it a little on a hill) after changing the turbo I never got to 1300. Now with the ez and other mods i can get to about 1200 towing ect.

with my set up I can hit 1300° going over a speed bump

That is of course unless I downshift to 2nd
