Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What happens when you take out the plate all together?

I have seen more than a couple of you now that have completely removed the fuel plate from your pumps. What exactly does this do... and I would assume the smoke is outrageous? how much more power does it add over a #10 plate? And most importantly, other than high EGT's, is it safe for the engine/fuel pump?
