Seatbelts in 5th Wheel?

Used- what to check?

What mods have you done to improve your fuel milage while towing?

Added a wing, slowed down, larger or smaller tires, air filter, EZ or ther boxes, other bombing things, fuel additives, tire pressures, waxing your rig or what?

What was the most succefull single item or combination of items you did that made the largest MPG gain?

Thanks

Bob

The two most effecive things I did to my truck, was to slow down a bit on the highway, from 75MPH to about 63MPH, and have a very light foot.

About two weeks ago, I got 25. 6MPG on a 250 mile trip from Laredo, Tx, to Corpus Christi, Tx.

But that is my RECORD HIGH. I can get about 12MPG in town. (HEAVY FOOT)

Don't think of this as preachin'....

... 'cause I don't practice it! :D

whatever roadspeed and rpms you wind up at, keep your boost less than 10psi (not peak, or w'gate blow, just the steady reading). and if your EGT's are around 500 or less, that shows that a better percentage of your heat is being converted to motion, and not just blown out thru the pipe.

As for mods that increase MPG, every piece of BOMB parts has just encouraged me to enjoy it more, so, if it would have, my behavior has negated it. However, they haven't penalized me, either, so if I ever do run an entire tank obeying every speed limit, and doing all those '70's oil embargo fuel conservation rules (most of you remember those, right? Drive like there's an egg on the gas pedal, lead the red lite so that you don't crush a tomato between foot and brake pedal)... I'd probably report some 20's for regular driving..... HOWEVER>>> My daily runarounds have been in the 15-17mpg range on every before-n-after comparison that i've done... I have, however, done one highway run, (not behaving myself, either) that netted 22mpg, and a few that were right around 20.

VA = 2MPG gain.

IAT Sensor Change = almost 1 mpg.

Empty I'm doing 22. 4 when I'm running 2 lane (60 mph) and just over 21 on the interstate.

I'm running a NAPA Gold air filter (no BOMB there). I want to change to the filter mentioned in Mopar Guys post a couple of days ago. I didn't like K&N because of oil on the turbo blades but I didn't really see any gains from it mileage wise anyway so I went back to paper.

Finally, I run Stanadyne Performance at every fillup. I like the pump protection and I think it helps mpg.

European fuel price incentive!!

A combination of boost pressures in the single figures and conservative EGTs plus an awareness of the traffic situation around me, gets the best mileage..... and the power mods I've installed have all collectively helped. The Horton fan is going on in a couple of weeks time and I expect that to make the single, largest contribution - the motivation being the extortionate price of diesel in Europe, currently averaging just over $4/US gallon :( at today's exchange rate.

BUT, I still like to play from time to time... ... . :D:D

Careful awareness of speed is most CERTAINLY the best method likely to deliver maximum fuel mileage in ANY vehicle. This includes watching traffic far ahead to minimize spedup/slowdown as traffic does the "accordian" bit - and also adjusting speed to stoplites to avoid stopping helps. A while back, I thought my trucks mileage was down from previous times, and so carefully monitored and controlled my driving while pulling our fiver over a known route I frequently use as a "control" route for such checks... Turns out I got EXACTLY the same mileage as before - I had simply been careless in my driving habits, and "enjoying" that Cummins power too much... ;)

BUT, if I was REALLY interested in an add-on for increased mileage, I'd install a propane setup adjusted and operated to obtain maximum mileage. I *do* have a propane setup on my truck - but it's currently set for performance, and haven't checked it for economy in this setting...

mileage gains?

Speed towing is probably where you will see the most bang for the buck but I also installed a 16cm2 housing on a 97 12 valver and saw a 1. 5 mpg increase towing but no change solo. Temperatures droped about 100F. but have to live with slooow spool up.

I had the Dr. Performance Phase II kit put on my 1 ton and went from 197. 1 hp at the rear wheels to 299. 7 hp at the rear wheels. They put in a new pump with titanium rollers, etc and the new injectors are titanium tipped, smaller holes at a different angle, and atomize the fuel to a much smaller particle. I had never previously gotten better than 11. 5 pulling my 31 foot 5th wheel, but this last week, pulling in the mountains I got 12. 5 mpg. Also picked up about 1. 5 mpg running empty. Besides that, the only rigs that pass me now are the ones I voluntarily LET pass me. E-mail me if you want more info on the Phase II they put in for me.

I keep my foot and the diesel pedal off of the back of the radiator :D

Seriously- I started using fuel additive regularly, and went to Amsoil synthetic. I picked up a half mile per gallon. I've got the bigger RV injectors, but haven't driven long enough to know just how much of an improvement I will get. But I will get an improvement. How do I know this. My trip computer, while inaccurate is running between 20 and 20. 4 driving around locally. It has never done that before. Presently, my fuel mileage average is 16. 5 - 16. 8 mpg. I'm hoping to get up to 17. 5 mpg, but I won't be disappointed if I don't. The power is nice to have. Just remember, watch that heavy foot and you will probably improve by at least 1 mpg. I did.
