I was talking to a pump rebuilder today and asked him what happens if the return line is kinked or restricted. He said it can retrard timing and if its bad enough the pump pressure goes sky high and it can blow a hole in the pump. I thought this was interesting because I've been told here that lack of fuel pressure also retards timing. I'm wondering if anyone has any comments about this.

Probable on the timing retard. Not sure about blowing a hole in it though. I have a feeling some seals will let go first. :)

The other big problem is no return fuel for cooling. :(

What is needed is a redesign of the return system so we can cool these pumps better at high output.

Hey, SmokeHouse Diesel gotta project for ya. :-laf

OK

3/8" return line. Then drill out that resrtiction hole. But that would lower the internal pressure and retard the timing. So we add a piston lift pump from a 1997 application to supply the added fuel flow required to keep the internal psi in specs (about 50 at slow idle)

Now, a larger supply line is needed, say 1/2". Then we have to remove the OEM pick-up inside the tank to allow the new pump to suck.

Not a problem. I have the (fuel) lines here and and most of the fittings. NAPA delivers Weatherhead products, so I'm all over it like white on rice, in a glass of milk on a paper plate during a snow storm.
