I don't mean to be stupid #ad
, but what is a 5th gear nut that I keep reading about, what is that all about ? Also where would I get a rebuild manual for the Getrag 5 speed ?

------------------
1985 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4(wasn't that hard to do!) in 1999,converted to a 1991 Cummins Turbo diesel & 5 speed Getrag in 2000(wife can't drive a stick :). 4:10 gears, limited slip rear end, 205 transfer case, 16" Goodyear GSA Wranglers and LE Package and a Sony CD Stereo. A one of a kind truck(Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton)If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy.

The infamous 5th gear nut is found in the New Venture 5 speed manual transmission model NV4500. The transmission is on '94+ models.
Kind of makes you feel a little better having the Getrag box.
On some of the 4500's the 5th gear would work against the nut (from high torque, lower rpm harmonics and vibes) and spin the nut or strip out the threads.
Try a good trans. shop for the Getrag book. . see where they got theirs. . if they have one. Check the links for Standard Transmissions. . call them. . helpful folks.
Good luck.

I think I'll stick with my non-howling NV4500
There's not a shop around this valley here that will rebuild a Getrag without outsourcing to a shop in Denver almost 300 miles away, you'd think a valley(mesa county) with around 100,000 people in it and numerous trannt shops, that they could handle such a job. I've had (4th gear) syncro and bellhousing problems with my NV4500 all have been repaired under the shop's warranty(not without a fight though and a couple threats involving the BBB).
Since the fixes about maybe 3000 miles ago,
My trannt has suffered no problems. My only problem now is a badly slipping clutch( a Luk that really reamed my wallet).
my 2 hot rod Lincolns,
joe
