WELL, it's sorta like THIS:

For newcomers to these forums unfamiliar with some of the more common modifications done to our trucks, the BHAF (Big Honkin' Air Filter) is substitution of a much larger than stock paper element air filter to allow greater air flow with excellent overall efficiency and reduced air flow restriction. This becomes even more practical and desirable as power-enhancing mods are done to the engine that increases demand for additional airflow.
The filters commonly used are ones such as the Fleetguard #AH19037 - this filter will directly attach to the stock Cummins rubber intake tube after the stock filter and housing is removed from it's location - no adapters of any kind are needed.
As can be seen, I have added a thin fabric outer covering to mine to provide some capture of larger debris before it can contaminate the filter itself - these filters run about $50, depending on brand and source - so prevention to enhance filter life helps! My wife made up the one shown, and it uses a tie - string at each end to stretch to a good smooth fit. I plan to spray that covering with a light coating of K&N oil to attract fine dust, and to enhance the water resistance of the installation, since otherwise it is sorta open to the elements.
Aftermarket covers are available from places like Outerwears that help provide added filter protection, as well as to improve appearance - they come in several colors and are washable - I have a red on on order as this is written.
Here is the outerwears pre-filter installed:

Heat shields are also available to help partition the BHAF away from the heat of the adjacent turbo housing, as well as to enhance cooler airflow from the side of the engine bay rather than from the turbo side, where heat is likely to be somewhat higher - COOL air is GOOD air in most cases.
Part of one such heat shield can be seen in the photo above - here's another shot from a different angle:

So, there ya have it - the BHAF!
