WELL, it's sorta like THIS:

For newcomers to these forums unfamiliar with some of the more common modifications done to our trucks, the BHAF (Big Honkin' Air Filter) is substitution of a much larger than stock paper element air filter to allow greater air flow with excellent overall efficiency and reduced air flow restriction. This becomes even more practical and desirable as power-enhancing mods are done to the engine that increases demand for additional airflow.

The filters commonly used are ones such as the Fleetguard #AH19037 - this filter will directly attach to the stock Cummins rubber intake tube after the stock filter and housing is removed from it's location - no adapters of any kind are needed.

As can be seen, I have added a thin fabric outer covering to mine to provide some capture of larger debris before it can contaminate the filter itself - these filters run about $50, depending on brand and source - so prevention to enhance filter life helps! My wife made up the one shown, and it uses a tie - string at each end to stretch to a good smooth fit. I plan to spray that covering with a light coating of K&N oil to attract fine dust, and to enhance the water resistance of the installation, since otherwise it is sorta open to the elements.

Aftermarket covers are available from places like Outerwears that help provide added filter protection, as well as to improve appearance - they come in several colors and are washable - I have a red on on order as this is written.

Here is the outerwears pre-filter installed:

Heat shields are also available to help partition the BHAF away from the heat of the adjacent turbo housing, as well as to enhance cooler airflow from the side of the engine bay rather than from the turbo side, where heat is likely to be somewhat higher - COOL air is GOOD air in most cases.

Part of one such heat shield can be seen in the photo above - here's another shot from a different angle:

So, there ya have it - the BHAF!

Is it not critical as to what type of material is on the outside? Thanks. My heavy equipment has a foam type exterior covering.

AS to the question about specific outer wraps for these filters, from what I have heard, the foam material outer coverings seem pretty ineffective due to being too porous - the stuff I used is hopefully woven fine enough to do SOME filtering, but thin enough to provide added protection without overly compromising the airflow I was looking for with the BHAF - time will tell, and I can easily remove it if the filter-minder indicates there is a problem.

No Im not sure witch are water proof but you'll know when you buy it there about twice the price of normal filters ... I think the donaldson is water proof??

DM

Note ::: outerwares are not water proof unless you ask for the water proof version and then its still only water resistant not water proof in theroy. its like a mesh sreen real real fine ... ... think of some thing like panty hose ..... some dirt track racers accutally use panty hose and just dispose of them after a race (cheaper).

the outerwares can be cleaned and it adds alot of life to the bhaf.

It's worth mentioning that the interior of all my stock intake, and the inlet/impellers of my turbo were PERFECTLY clean after 35,000 miles with that nasty 'ol K&N...

I have no doubt the BHAF is more efficient and lower maintenance - but they AIN'T cheap, and I will be VERY surprised if my next few oil analysis' show any reduction in silicon or related items.

Time and miles will tell... ;) :D

I don't know why you are worried about waterproof filters. I have had mine in Seattle, the rain city, for over two years without any problem. I can spend hours in a rainstorm on the highway, open the hood, and the filter is still dry. Other than a hurricane, I don't know a better place to test for water! Mine is called a BFAF, and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Well, it's like THIS, I sometimes have occasion at service stations, rest stops and automotive gatherings, to raise my hood - and then when a group of beer-guzzling Ford and GM owners gather around my truck to see what a REAL diesel engine looks like, I don't want them spilling beer directly into my nice BHAF! ;) :D

So, like man, put an Outwears on that there BFAF! They are like a raincoat you know, man! Same as the ring mark in your wallet! SNOKING

I just thought I'd add that the Napa filters and the Wix filters are the same because Wix makes all of Napa's filters. That is why the numbers are almost the same

Ive noticed alot of water on top of the outerwares and it just rolls off

. . after a good AUTO WASH with bottom blaster if you pop the hood you can see the water hitting the filter and rolling off... ... . thats why I got the Water Resistant outerwares

my filter was continuing to get damp. NOT GOOD Id rather have a stock set up then have a unprotected BHAF.

If you never wash your truck not having a water resistant outwares should be OK

GARY ,

Whats that chrome canister hooked to your battery???And why do you have a vent on your oil fill??? the 2 are conneted right whats that for anhyway??

The chrome canister is THIS thing:

And the hose to the oil-fill cap is the oil return from that Frantz bypass oil filter...

Bhst

I was kind of wonderin what that BHST (Big Honkin Silver Thing) was... kinda looks about the size of a roll of toilet paper.

Does it add horsepower ?

Make it spool quicker ?

I beleive it uses a roll of TP i also saw a tread with a bigger version that used a roll of paper towels. I think it helps get sutt out of the oil.
