How much would a 93 W250 driveline be worth? Drive line including axles trans (5-speed), transfer case, engine (150k- 170k mi) mabee even sping and entire suspention? Would a dead or alive gutbag make much of a differance on it? If you guys could throw a couple of numbers at me it would be much appreciated.

Dana 70 srw ~$1000. T-case ~$500, Getrag 'core' $500 Engine ~$3000. Very good junkyard price site is www.car-part.com. Enter item, year, etc get prices. What ya doing bro, looking for parts or parting something out?????

I am still thinking, but if the trans is toast, I need to do something with my rear axle as the adapters are finished (the adapters new are way to expensive, I can almost get an entire axle for what they want), it would be nice not to have to carry two spares (might do the front). I am just trying to figure out if I could get a recked 2nd gen would I brake even after getting rid of the current parts. Any thoughts?

Well I don't know what you want to do, but all I have to say is what you have is PRICELESS. I don't care if you gotta get a NV4500, Dana 80 DRW, let the crew cab sit til funds arrive, you do have another CTD to drive right? Yeah if you could find a wrecked 2nd gen for cheap and get a Dana 80 yippy, but I would search for a drw 80 for the time being, put up an ad if not done so already in the tdr classifieds. Try that link I suggested earlier. Don't give up on your awesome dream ride bro.

Even if you break even money-wise, you will have a ton of labor into swapping a whole draivetrain. I would just fix or replace the trans, put a different rear in it and swap the front hubs. The less labor you put in the better. Do one thing at a time so you don't end up with a truck completely torn apart with no end in sight. It is easy to get overwhelmed by a large project (don't ask me how I know). The problem I see with your 2nd gen idea is nothing will just bolt in, it will all have to be customized to work. Again that would make the job seem very large and will undoubtedly take twice as long as you think it will. These are just things I've learned by tearing apart and not finishing projects in the past. That truck is too cool to suffer that kind of fate. The truck is a runner, keep it that way and don't reinvent the wheel. I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry for the sermon. ;) :D

There are several dually rear ends in the classifieds right now. Unless the getrag is totally trashed, put some bearings in it, and run it. The Getrag gets a bad wrap most of the time. Don't let the truck end up to be a lost cause. Stick with first gen parts, as far as the front end goes. The second gen stuff is completely different. I believe you would be time and $$$ ahead to look for what you need, and not try and find a wrecked truck with the stuff you need.

Good luck, keep your head up.

I agree with all of the above - the BODY/CHASSIS you have is what many of us all want to build - keep it amigo. Swapping parts can be done and can be done in time, but that rig is a keeper. As well, keeping the running gear '1st gen' will keep your life a lot less stressful. Swaps are doable, but there is always some fabrication needed, somehow, somewhere, and if you keep the parts 1st gen you'll be (in the short run) happier. Down the road upgrading is cool - it took me 3 years to figure out what I wanted to do, and it's going to take me a year to do it..... fortunately I have the time, space, $, and desire to do this insano project of mine, and another car to drive in the meantime.....

Hail all you noble 1st geners. Well, to start the crew is DEFINETALLY staying, no matter what. It is a dream I have had for the last  years. It will stay. As for the second gen equiptment, I was just exploring the possibilitys. I would eventually like to have ALOT of hp, so I am trying to think of the best way in the long run to accomidate that. That link you gave is awsome. I have spent some time on there lately. All said and done though, if I eliminated everything below the frame and replaced it, would everything not fit? And be easyer in the long run of constantly adjusting stuff to accomodate the new mod?

Thanks alot guys, I am glad there is a place like this where you can get nuetral oppinions from other who know and have been where you are. :{ Sob, you guys are just great.

Robert

P. S. To all you guys creating a crew, get prepared to walking alot. Trucks this size and parking lots are really tough. It has gotta be a 5 mile turning radious, and ten parking places long!

I am not up on the dana 80 rear swap, RonA can fill us in more there. But if you were to swap a 60F out of a second gen, that would be work. First off the diff is on the driver side on a second gen, this means you would need to change the transfer case. Second with the front, its coil setup on a second gen, and leafs on the front or your first. Lot of fab work there.

I can see why you are thinking about the 80 rear, but I think the 70 would be plenty strong unless you are going to go all out truck pulling with it. Even then the 80 can be broken. If you find a dually dana 70 out of a first gen, it has larger axel shafts, larger wheel studs and inner wheel bearings. (learned that from somebody here) The 60 front that is in the first gens is a good unit, complete with lockout hubs. It will be plenty strong, and can be upgrade to better shafts easily. Plus the wheelbearings are servicable, compared to the second gens that are not.

You need to advertise on the TDR classifieds that you want to change your 3/4 single wheel to dually. You could switch out the hubs for someones dually hubs to make the front for dually rims. I am sure unless someone proves me wrong that the dana 60f is the same for 3/4 and one tons except for the hubs. Then switch out rear ends, or buy a dually rear to make everything good.

You'll be ok, just think things through. Like said above, switching second gen stuff will be a BIG project. Lots of fabbing etc. No doubt would be cool in the end, but it might get you in trouble with the pastor.

Sounds like you need to figure out the transmission problem first, get it fixed, then move on to making it a real dually.

Take it easy friend, you are in good hands here. We'll take care of you.
