What is the best fix for the 5th gear nut problem? The nut replacement kit or a new output shaft? I'm going to be putting a new Southbend clutch in shortly and want to eliminate the nut problem at the same time.

Joe, It depends on what dealer your talking to. They are just like game wardens... . They each have their own rule book, so it depends on who your talking to as to who's rules your playing by! LOL.
Seriosly though, I was told that the problem was fixed in the 99's but I still take care of it as if the problem is still there. #1 rule, Don't lug 5th gear.

I read the article refered to and with all the hauling I do was rather concerned about it. I called Ft. Worth and talked to the people there about it and their fully splinned shaft for fifth gear. He said they had done a few but it did not sound like a lot at this point. (I had visions of fifth wheel nuts flying off like snow in a snow storm) Though those they have done have been successful. I told him about a sound I was getting in fifth gear. He said he doubted if it was the fifth gear nut problem seeing I only had 55K on it even if I had towed for almost all of that mileage. He refered me to a repair facility he highly recomended and does alot of business with in Gainesville, Tx. I called them and went over there and talked to the person he suggested. I was shown one he was repairing at that very time. His response was that he doesn't see hardly any problems with them until around or after 100K and then only those that are border line abused by the owners. He told me the first thing I will encounter is the transmission shifting real hard going into fifth. He said, (what I have read here already) keep the rpms up to a reasonable rate and you'll be fine. The viberation/sound I was worried about that I was hearing was a viberation in the transmission shifting lever that he said was common and they (dodge) and he himself have tried to stop but without much success. He knew what it was as soon as he heard it, no hesitation or doubt on his part. Both of these businesses and the people I talked with were outstanding and honest, they could have sold me something without to much trouble at all, but chose to be honest and helpful instead. Now tell me that isn't a rarity now days, but a **** nice one when you can find it :).

Check out issue 30 of the TDR. They had a good article on a permanate fix. I don't have it here with me at work and I can't remember the specifics but it involved a new shaft with full splines for the fifth gear.
