I spray the engine with straight simple green, let it sit a few minutes, then hose it off with full hose pressure. I try to keep the direct spray of water off the electronic control boxes as much as possible, but they are sealed pretty good.
Just be forewarned that simple green was found to be corrosive to the aluminum parts under the hood. Do a search, and you should be able to find some threads on this topic. It has been discussed extensively.
Dno't use "Purple Stuff" it will stain any painted areas on the motor and is way too strong for just degreasing,Trust me I did this to my engine and it was diluted. It will get the grease off but it will also stain
Tried gunk once on mine, got the oil off, but unless you actually scrub (not me) the dirt will seem almost baked on afterwards. I won't be doing that again... .
When I was in my teens I worked at Bowman Field in Louisville KY as a lineboy. One of our jobs was to wash planes. We had a 55 gallon barrel that we kept filled with Gunk. We'd spray the underside of planes, wait 5 minutes, then scrub like hell. It did o. k.
I've been using citrus solvent. Takes any oil off great! I dont know where to get it (full strength) locally. Rinse the heck out of it or this may eat the paint! I think I'm addicted to this smell!!
You could get the diluted stuff from Home Depot type stores. Aint the same though.
