Yesterday when I left work, I had only gone a few hundred yards when the pickup lost power. The engine was still running but felt like half the power was suddenly gone. The throttle still responded, but it seemed that 1500 rpm was about all it would do while in gear (I've got a 5spd). I was wondering if the engine had reverted to "limp home" mode or whatever it is called. Anyway after a couple blocks everything kicked back in place and I had power again. The rest of the day and so far today everything is back to normal. Makes me wonder when it will happen again.

Is this a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem?

I've got a EZ box that is over a year old with no problems.

I had plenty of fuel pressure during the time it was running weakly, so that shouldn't be part of the problem.

MAP Sensor?

Sounds like exactly what happened to me when my MAP sensor went out. Mine would act up intermitintly (sp?) and the check engine light would come on when I lost power. New MAP sensor and no more problem.

You might try cleaning the MAP and IAT sensors with carb clearner and reinstall and see what happens. ;)

I agree try the map sensor

I had two map sensor go out in 36,000 miles, the first the day I took delivery, after being in traffic jam fro a hour idling along at 10 mph. the second time it started acting up after a emergency stop the barked the turbo, the check engine light came on and it was a bad compuication code. the light kept going on and clearing. then final when in to limp mode. Pull the goodie and the dealer fixed it no charge.

cheers from the middle east, thruck in Washington state. Vancouver dodge fixed, but would give a rebuild on the transmission.

I didn't notice the check engine light come on during the couple of blocks that I had reduced power.

So assuming the MAP sensor may be the problem, any ideas on what a MAP sensor cost?

Better price from Cummins or the dealer? I thought I've read in the past that the dealers sell the IAT sensor for a reasonable price, so maybe the MAP sensor would be the same.

Did the MAP fix the problem??

Did the MAP fix the problem? My 98. 5 is doing the exact same thing (no code either). No heavy smoke. It seems to only lose about half power when it is 90+ degrees outside. When it is cooler, the truck runs fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Messup on my part. I do not know if I have any codes because I have not had a chance to get my Autozone. What I meant to state was that I have had no Service engine lights show up at any time.

Clean MAP & IAT. While you are doing that disconnect both batteries. When you reconnect the batteries turn key to "on" position (do not start) "slowly" depress go pedal all the way to the floor, then "slowly" release go pedal. Turn off key - then start as normal. You may try just cleaning the MAP and see if that resolved the problem. then the IAT . . . if you do each item separately you will know what you did to resolve the problem. Just takes longer . . . Let us know what worked.
