Did the first oil change this weekend. I had read all of the oil smell posts, so I was prepared, but I have a question. Why is it that the factory fill does not smell, and apparently most of the replacement oils smell? I had heard the smell was the additive package for CH-4 oils. Do any of you oil experts know if this is true? And if that is true, then are we getting factory fill oil that does not meet the recommended specifications? I filled with Valvoline PB 15-40, and it has quite a strong odor, whereas I had never had any odor on the factory fill.
Who ever designed that vent tube disaster ought to have at least one of them stuck where the sun doesn't shine. I plan on doing a relocate of the tube, but winter and no garage has put that down the priority list. I did remove the entire hose and bottle and cleaned it up. What a mess. The more difficult job will be cleaning the whole front of the engine, fan, front suspension, etc. It frosts me just a little to have a brand new engine looking like it should have about 100K on it. There is absolutely no forgivable excuse for Cummins/DC designing the vent like this.
I feel a little better, now that I have vented. Maybe sticking that vent tube you know where, is not sufficient punishment, I think I would rather have the little weasel that designed that tube detail my engine compartment with a toothbrush.
