I just upgraded my pickup from an edge ez to an edge comp box (2000 2500 4x4 short bed with stock transmission, 80K miles). I tied in the edge comp box wire to the fuel pump.

Do I dare set the unit at maximum (setting five, with submenu fueling set to five) with a stock transmission. I never tow anything, I just from time to time accelerate hard from a stop light, or on the highway get on it when passing some one.

If I leave the swithc setting on 5x5, Will I be able to tell if I'm hurting my transmission before it's too late, or will my transmission break before I can sense it going out (I've got a transmission temp gauge and monitor the temp, but am not sure I can tell if the transmission is slipping).

thanks,

usually you will feel it slip, either by the converter clutch or bands/clutch packs slipping (you really can't tell the difference). sometimes they break internal parts, but that's not typically the case.

Not an expert here but this is what I get from this board.

5x5 should only be used for heavy throttle runs (hotrodding) not daily driving with a STOCK transmission. This is because on 5x5 you apply much more power at a lower acc peddle setting. Trans pressure is partly controlled by the apps and is lower at a lower peddle and therefore your trans pressures are too low for the power and you will toast your trans.

This is just my impression of my research and I could be wrong. Hopefully someone with more experience will fill in the gaps.

Thanks for the help.

How do you recommend I set the switch setting ( don't tow or carry any thing heavy in the bed)?

thanks in advance

Nothing could be worse

Hello Jon, what Tom said above is 100% correct. The way to keep a stock trans alive is to use as much pedal travel as possible. Therefore, if you want your stock trans to live, run on 1x5 on the comp and use lots of pedal for accelerating. This will result in the highest trans pressures possible and MAY keep the trans alive for awhile. Also lock out OD for driving around town, and use it only above 45 mph or so.

Most upgraded transmissions have at idle more pressure than a stock trans has at half throttle, and it only gets better with more throttle pedal travel. Pressure is what an auto trans lives on.

I'd plan on an upgraded trans very soon if you use 5x5 as your around town setting and drive 'gently' with very small pedal movement, 'cause the box will create more than full stock HP and torque at just above idle pedal travel. And this WILL kill your trans.

I think Fred Swanson of Desert Diesel is near you, give him a call and let hime explain or show you what is in an upgraded trans.

I hope this helps Greg L

Thanks for the recommedations, for now I'll play it safe.

Thanks for all the advice, for now I'll play it safe,

I'll set my comp switch settings at 1x5.

I did make a couple of short rolling start runs yesterday after I completed the install, one at 3x5 and another at 5x5, it was pretty amazing, the acceleration gave me a chill, especially the 50 to 80 mph acceleration. The transmission seems fine after my little bit of experimentation ( kept an eye on my transmission temp).

I guess I didn't really need to connect up the fuel pump wire after all (getting that splice connecter on was pain), until I get my transmission beefed up.
