I blew the stock turbo in my 04 cummins over new years weekend. I want to do a twin setup someday, but right now I can't afford it so I want to know what would be the best single setup right now. I have a pusher pump, big fuel line kit, hi-ram intake, tst powermax cr stacked with a bully dog chip, bully dog rfi, and bully dog propane kit. Everything was running fine til I put banks big head actuator on and after that I was building 35psi with the stock turbo. That only lasted about an hour before the turbo blew.

Right now I've been working with Industrial Injection in Salt Lake City on a new turbo setup that they build in house. They say it is very similar to a B1.

Welcome any remarks.

What kind of horse power are you putting down? That would be the biggest factor in what kind of turbo to go with in my opinion.

Was that 35 psi peak or constant? I hit 40 on my stock turbo when I turn the box up, now I'm getting real nervous! I have been looking at turbo's but haven't nailed down which one I'll go with yet. I think the B1-04 is near the top of the list though!

I am in the same boat kinda

Not really wanting the complexity of twins, but needing more psi with durability --

For cost BD-Power's "Super B" looks nice... But I am not fimiliar with this turbo and the install, etc

bpenrod I don't think that you have to worry about hitting 40psi. The 35psi was max and not constant. However I've heard that the stock turbo is only good for an additional 100hp in mods. I just want a turbo that will handle the power. I've never been on a dyno but I would guess that I have somewhere around 500-600 hp and about 1200 lbs torque at the wheels or at least trying to get to the wheels. My torque converter needs to be upgraded.

I have heard the same thing about the turbo being good for around 100 additional horse. Since I'm well over that and the wastegate can't keep up with the fueling I figured I better start looking at replacing it!

Hey guys!

I am running the BD-Power Super B single turbo. It has handled everything I have thrown at it. When everything is turned up on my truck, I would say she is easily 500+ hp. I have hit 45+ lbs boost and egt's in the 1500 range. And this turbo has never barked. Cool down times are around 30 seconds. She spools quickly, and has been very reliable.

The install was pretty much a bolt on affair. The only real cutting involved was the AFE airbox. The lower inside corner had to be trimmed to accomidate the larger turbo. The exhuast bolted right up.

And the price is really hard to beat. I purchased mine for $1050 shipped, caught it on sale. There is a one or two year warranty from BD-Power that comes with it. The best part, and the reason I went with BD, was it was an easy step up to their twins. I was originally going twins, but no one had any for sale, month + long waiting lists every where I called. I went with a single, and am very happy. Even questioning myself as far as upgrading to the twins, this little turbo does it all. Why spend the extra money? I'm not pulling or racing, but if I was, it would be with BD-Power.

Mike,

That sounds great! Is that a waste-gated turbo? I'd rather keep the boost around 40-ish in hopes of saving the head gasket!!

bpenrod,

Yep, she has a 40lb factory set wastegate. I have gone over a few times, and she has handled the higher boost with ease, thouh I don't make a habit of it. And you can see from my sig, I'm running some HP. Gotta get her dynoed.

Been slow at work so I have spent most of the day looking at turbos! It has come down to the BD Super B and the B1-04. Both look like a bolt on setup and I have heard good things about both. I've been shopping around for a package deal with manifold and brake and the two combo's (BD turbo and brake vs B1-04 and Pac-Brake) are real close in price. A little off topic here but I think I like the Pac-Brake a little better than the BD so that might swing the decision. As for the turbo's, not sure if anyone has experience with the two side by side to know how they compare.

You're right, turbo alone the BD is around 3 or 4 hundred cheaper. Since I only want to tear things apart once and do the manifold and brake it changes things. If I go with the BD it seems to make sense to use thier brake and it is around 400 more than a Pac-Brake. The BD turbo with a Pac-Brake would be cheapest all around but not sure how they would work together.

bpenrod,

Give Rick a call at Dave's Diesel (260) 665-5396. He is just across the Michigan state line off of I-69 in Angola Indiana. He deals with the BD-Power turbos/trannies/boxes/injectors and B1's. Also carries an array of exhuast brakes and has the ATS manifolds/trannies/boxes etc... Usually has all of this stuff in stock. Rick has one heck of a facility, very busy shop/showroom. Give him a call, the guy is a fountain of information. He is a high horse power diesel specialist, if he doesn't know, he will find out.

BD Vender

Give Kyle a call at Extreme Diesel & Offroad Performance. (253-376-8002) I ordered a set of BD twins on 12/31 and they arrived at my door less than a week later, great to work with and very responsive. I haven't had time for the install, maybe this w/e.

Any turbo that is a "direct bolt in" will work with any exhaust brake designed for a stock truck and vice-versa. The Pac and BD brake's will both work with the B1 turbo line and if the BD turbo is a direct bolt in they'll both work with it as well. When I switched turbo's I bought a 4" inline brake from Pac and mounted it under the truck incase I decide to make future turbo changes... ... twins possibly :D

That is what I was thinking. Since I am going to do it all at once I thought about going to a Pac-Brake from the newer truck to get the 4" outlet. My 03 has the 3. 5" turbo outlet.

Abolutley !!!!

Why not, if you are going to do it, do it right!!!!

bpenrod,

In 2 or 3 weeks I'll have a low mileage B1-2-04 and a Jacobs for sale as a package. Shoot me a pm if you're interested. I'm stepping up to twins and a 5" inline.
